Duties Summary

Tax Services & Processing Division: Account Management Section

  • Expeditiously correct all header, business rule, financial and other types of simple to moderate errors of all returns and other documents.
  • Process, post, or update net income, general excise, use, county surcharge, withholding, transient accommodation, rental motor vehicle and tour vehicle surcharge tax returns.
  • Update license and permit information issued by the Department.

Tax Services & Processing Division: Customer Inquiry Section

  • Aid taxpayers and their representatives in inquiries through in person, telephone calls, web messaging, and written communications.
  • Work closely with all sections of Taxpayer Services to achieve Departmental and branch goals.

Tax Collection Division: Collection Branch

  • Conduct/enforce collection of delinquent taxes through appropriate collection procedures.
  • Secure non-filed returns from taxpayers.
  • Conduct investigations to determine compliance with state tax laws.

Maui District Office: Tax Clerks

  • Provide assistance of a varied nature to customers who contact the one stop services section.
  • Answer and resolve simpler complaints.
  • Assist customers in filing of their net income, general excise and withholding, transient accommodations tax returns, and license applications as requested.
  • Handle cashiering of tax payments.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

  • Prerequisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
    • Knowledge of: Arithmetic, English language, and office equipment such as adding and calculating machines and personal computers.
    • Ability to: Think logically and analytically; communicate effectively orally and in writing; elicit information from individuals and judge pertinence of such information; read and understand complex materials; use tact and sound judgement; follow and/or provide orals and written procedures and instructions; understand the impact of actions taken/recommended; and plan and organize work.
  • Experience Requirements:
    • One (1) year of responsible, substantive clerical work experience which demonstrated numerical facility and logical, analytical thinking and involved reviewing documents to ensure that numerical data and arithmetic computations are complete, accurate, properly categorized and recorded, and in accordance with pertinent rules, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Specialized Clerical Experience:
    • One (1) year of progressively responsible experience of the kind and quality described in the statements below and in the amounts shown below or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Substitution Allowed:
    • A Certificate of Achievement in Accounting, an Associate in Science Degree in Accounting, or a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university may be substituted for Specialized Clerical Experience required.
    • Successful completion of fifteen (15) semester credit hours of coursework from an accredited college or university which included at least six (6) semester credit hours in accounting courses may be substituted for six (6) months of Specialized Clerical Experience.
