Tax Auditor

Pay: $61,822.80 - $88,572.85 annually

A Tax Auditor is the entrance level of the professional tax auditing class series and is primarily responsible for auditing Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT), also known as sales tax. The employee performs professional work in the auditing of financial records of businesses to calculate sales/TPT and Use Tax liability, determining compliance with established policies, procedures, codes, and ordinances, and generating tax revenues for the City and other Arizona taxing jurisdictions.

The work involves the acquisition and application of professional knowledge and judgment. This class is distinguished from the Senior Tax Auditor class by handling routine audits, while the Senior Tax Auditor performs advanced-level audits requiring well-developed professional knowledge of accounting theory and investigative skills. Supervision is provided by the Tax Audit Supervisor through work papers, reports, and conferences.

Employees may progress to Senior Tax Auditor after completing original City probation, being employed a minimum of one year as a City of Mesa Tax Auditor, and meeting specific criteria-based promotion requirements.

Senior Tax Auditor

Pay: $75,134.38 - $107,644.37 annually

The Senior Tax Auditor performs professional Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT) auditing work, including on-site field audits of businesses liable for sales/TPT and Use Tax under City of Mesa and State of Arizona laws. Duties include auditing financial records, determining compliance, and generating tax revenues.

This role requires a high level of communication skills to prepare comprehensive reports that may serve as the basis for legal action. The Senior Tax Auditor also assists in training less experienced auditors and may travel in and out-of-state to complete assignments. Employees may progress to this classification via noncompetitive promotion after meeting specific requirements.

Responsibilities

• Audit financial records of businesses to calculate sales/TPT and Use Tax liability.
• Determine compliance with established policies, procedures, and tax laws.
• Generate tax revenues for the City of Mesa and other Arizona taxing jurisdictions.
• Prepare written reports detailing audit procedures, facts discovered, and determinations made.
• Assist in training less experienced auditors (Senior Tax Auditor).
• Travel in and out-of-state to complete audit assignments (Senior Tax Auditor).

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Auditing, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
• Valid Class D Arizona Driver’s License within 90 days of hire or promotion.
• Use of a personal vehicle for City business and valid liability insurance with minimum statutory coverage within 90 days of hire or promotion.

Qualifications

Tax Auditor

• Minimum: Any combination of training, education, and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Auditing, or a closely related field.
• Minimum: Some (6 months - 1 year) full-time, professional-level accounting or general auditing experience.
• Preferred: Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat Pro.

Senior Tax Auditor

• Minimum: Any combination of training, education, and/or experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Auditing, or a closely related field.
• Minimum: Three years of full-time, professional-level accounting or general auditing experience.
• Preferred: Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
