About the role
KPMG is seeking a Tax Associate to join our State & Local Tax practice.
Responsibilities
- Assist multi-state companies with state and local tax issues (income/franchise, sales/use, excise, and property tax), including compliance, consulting, planning, and controversies
- Assist clients with business tax planning transactions and mergers and acquisitions, including identifying and developing state and local tax issues and savings opportunities that arise from legal entity changes/transactions
- Research and draft state and local tax technical memoranda
- Supervise the work of shared services team members and interns
- Analyze, prepare, and review tax workpapers, returns, estimated payments, and extensions
- Assist in handling notices, including coordination of shared resources
- Build capabilities in key technologies that enable tax professionals for client service delivery, such as artificial intelligence (AI), Alteryx, Power BI, and more
- Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to develop and sustain excellent client relationships
- Stay current on state and local tax legislative, judicial, and administrative developments
Requirements
- Must be pursuing or have obtained within the past 12 months one of the following degrees/majors: JD and/or LLM in Taxation, or an equivalent program from an accredited college or university
- Preferred GPA of 3.0 or above
- Coursework or minor in information systems, software engineering, computer science, or data and analytics preferred
- Strong tax research skills
- Strong technical, business acumen, critical thinking, and agility skills; demonstrated ability to excel and drive strategic outcomes in a dynamic environment
- Professional demeanor and collaborative leadership approach
- Demonstrated quality service mindset and strong technical aptitude
- Ability to learn and navigate technologies such as AI, Alteryx, Power BI, MS Office Applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook), and apply emerging technologies to enhance tax processes and insights
- Excellent communication, time management, and leadership skills; feedback-oriented and resourceful in delivering high-quality work
- Must reside within a reasonably commutable distance to the office and be able to travel to commutable work locations using a personal vehicle or public transportation
- Ability to travel and/or work on-site at client premises as needed, sometimes with short notice
