About the role

This position provides technical and administrative assistance and oversight to Inspection positions and assists the program manager on program issues. This recruitment is an agency-only posting and is open exclusively to current Department of Environmental Quality employees.

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is the primary environmental permitting agency in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is responsible for administering laws and regulations related to air quality, water quality, water supply, renewable energy, and land protection. Through the dedication and work of over 800 employees across six regional offices and the Central Office in Richmond, DEQ issues permits, conducts monitoring and inspections, and enforces the law.

Responsibilities

  • manages multiple, complex projects with deadlines and heavy workloads to resolve compliance issues through technical, administrative, and enforcement oversight and performs facility inspections to evaluate the design and operation of petroleum storage tank systems
  • documents findings and work with owner/operators to remedy non-compliant conditions
  • assists tank owner/operators in complying with State laws and regulations governing storage tanks to promote improved environmental performance and reduce threats to human health and the environment from petroleum releases

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of federal/state/local laws and regulations governing petroleum storage, UST/AST design technology, corrosion protection systems, leak detection methods, environmental science and engineering practices, chemistry, and basic hydrogeology.
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities in project management and personal computer operations (including word processing, spreadsheets, and database management).
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Coursework or equivalent experience in environmental sciences.
  • Work experience demonstrating knowledge of technical details of petroleum storage tanks.
  • Work experience demonstrating strong work ethic and independent work skills.
  • Real ID or passport may be required to inspect some facilities.
  • This position may require you to operate a state owned or leased vehicle. Therefore, a valid driver's license is required.

Pay

Hiring Range: $80,000 - $98,000
