Tactical Paramedic
Nature of Work
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office is seeking to fill a vacancy of Tactical Paramedic. In order to apply, you must be a Pinellas County Certified Paramedic with active employment through Pinellas County Emergency Medical Services (PCEMS).
The background investigation process may take up to 6 weeks depending upon the complexity of the applicant's background and position for which they've applied.
Under the general direction of a Sergeant, this position performs emergency medical treatment to team members injured or ill persons while engaged in a tactical operation, providing the best possible treatment until the transfer to emergency medical services system. Must be capable of reacting with speed and composure under high stress conditions and must exercise initiative and independent judgment in determining proper actions to take. Position requires patient care in a training or high-risk environment and operates within the guidelines provided by the Pinellas County Emergency Medical Services Director.
Members must be a Pinellas County Certified Paramedic with active employment through Pinellas County Emergency Medical Services (PCEMS). Work is reviewed through oral and written reports, discussions, and personal observation for compliance and adherence to established procedures.
In addition to mandatory assignments, this position requires members to be available for on-call rotations including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Members in this position must reside in the following counties: Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, or Manatee.
Qualifications
- School Graduation or Equivalent Diploma: High School graduation or equivalent diploma from an institution accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) or licensed as a degree granting institution by the Commission for Independent Education
- Paramedic Certification: Valid State of Florida Paramedic Certification
- Pinellas County Certified Paramedic: Must be a Pinellas County Certified Paramedic with active employment through Pinellas County Emergency Medical Services (PCEMS)
- Years of Experience: Minimum of 3 years as a certified paramedic
- PHTLS Certification: Current Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certification
- ACLS Certification: Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from the American Heart Association or equivalent
- CPR Certification: Current Cardiopulmonary Respiration (CPR) course certification
- EPC Certification: Current Emergency Pediatric Care (EPC) certification
- APP Certification: Current Advanced Practice Paramedic (APP) certification, or attained within one (1) year
- Tactical Course Completion: Completion of an approved forty (40) hour Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) / Tactical Emergency Medical Service (TEMS) course, or within two years of employment
- Licenses and Credentials: Requires appropriate, unrestricted credentials according to the licensure, certification, and registration requirements of the jurisdiction
- Age Requirement: Must be at least 21 years of age
- Weapon Permit: Must be able to meet all legal requirements of Florida State Statute 790.06, License to Carry Concealed Weapon or Firearm within six (6) months of employment
- Handgun Carrying: Member will be required to carry an agency issued handgun while on duty
- Statutory Compliance: Must meet all legal requirements of Florida State Statute 790.25(q) within one year of employment
- Basic SWAT School Completion: Completed an approved 80 hour Basic SWAT School, within one year of employment
- Physical Abilities: Visual acuity of 20/30 vision standard in each eye; if corrective lenses must be used to satisfy 20/30 vision standard, uncorrected vision should be no worse than 20/100 in each eye
- Hearing Acuity: Ability to perceive sounds at normal voice range and sounds transmitted by radio and sirens
- Weapon Operation: Ability to operate authorized semi-automatic handguns designated by the agency from a standing, crouching, kneeling, or prone position with either hand with accuracy
- Equipment Handling: Must be able to conduct regular vigorous physical activity while wearing a full-face air purifying respirator, tactical vest, ballistic helmet, boots, and carrying a backpack with up to 20 lbs. of equipment
- Physical Activities: Must be able to climb stairs and ladders while wearing and carrying tactical equipment / gear
- Medical Attention: Must have full range of motion to administer medical attention and perform CPR
- Work Duration: Stand or walk while wearing and carrying tactical medical equipment / gear up to 12 hours per day
- Physical Tasks: Frequently bend, squat, kneel, reach, and twist
- Vehicle Operation: Ability to drive a motor vehicle in a safe and efficient manner
- Life Insurance: This position is eligible for participation in basic life insurance in the amount of $20,000, which is provided at no cost to members
