Tableau Engineer

Position Overview

We are looking for an experienced Tableau Engineer with strong expertise in Tableau dashboard development and SQL to design, develop, optimize, and maintain enterprise reporting solutions. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience building complex Tableau dashboards from multiple data sources, writing and optimizing SQL queries, working with cloud-based data platforms, and improving reporting performance. Experience with Tableau Server/Tableau Online, AWS data services, Python, APIs, and AI-assisted development tools is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop data-driven Tableau reports, dashboards, and visualizations from concept through deployment.
• Write, optimize, and maintain complex SQL queries for enterprise reporting.
• Develop Custom SQL to structure, aggregate, transform, and optimize reporting datasets.
• Apply a deep understanding of Tableau order of operations, including extracts, data sources, context filters, cascading filters, and parameters.
• Diagnose and resolve slow-performing Tableau workbooks and dashboards.
• Shift complex front-end filtering and processing into optimized database-level SQL where appropriate.
• Work with data from multiple sources, including Redshift, SQL Server, AWS Athena, data lakes, and other relational/columnar databases.
• Perform cross-database joins, data blending, and multi-source data integration.
• Maintain accurate, well-structured reporting datasets for downstream analytics.
• Build intuitive, user-friendly dashboards following visualization and reporting best practices.
• Troubleshoot data, SQL, workbook, extract, and report-level issues.
• Document dashboard logic, data sources, SQL transformations, and reporting processes.
• Contribute to visualization standards, style guides, and reporting best practices.
• Develop Python scripts for reporting automation, including dashboard exports and data-processing tasks.
• Integrate Tableau with APIs and other tools such as Python or R where required.
• Collaborate with cloud/data engineering teams to source and prepare reporting data.
• Support migration of existing Tableau Server reports and workbooks to Tableau Online.
• Use AI-assisted development tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, and GitHub Copilot to accelerate SQL development, testing, documentation, and automation.
• Apply agentic engineering practices to automate repetitive data preparation, QA, reporting, and refresh-scheduling activities.
• Participate in Agile development and collaborate with cross-functional technical and business teams.

Required Skills

• 5+ years of professional experience in Tableau and SQL development.
• Expert-level Tableau Desktop / Tableau Creator experience.
• Expert-level SQL, including writing, tuning, and maintaining complex queries.
• Strong experience with Tableau dashboard and report development.
• Advanced understanding of data modeling and multi-source data integration.
• Strong knowledge of Tableau filters, parameters, extracts, calculations, and performance optimization.
• Experience working with enterprise-scale reporting datasets.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Experience working in an Agile development environment.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Analytics, Information Systems, or a related field preferred.
