About the role
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Systems Engineer with expertise in Broadcast, IP, Cloud, and Zixi technologies to support the operational backbone of the MTN-TV Service and its IP content distribution platform. This is a hands-on, visible technical role where you’ll be responsible for systems integration, installation, troubleshooting, and live content delivery operations.
Responsibilities
- Live TV Operations Support
- Prepare and manage live signal delivery across various connectivity types (Internet, EVPL, P2P, MPLS).
- Configure and test devices prior to scheduled broadcasts.
- Monitor live feeds, troubleshoot technical issues, and ensure uninterrupted broadcast delivery.
- Provide on-call/on-site support during technical issues and be available on weekends during critical live broadcast events.
- Zixi Cloud Streaming Operations
- Manage end-to-end Zixi-based streaming operations.
- Configure, test, and deploy IP stream packages.
- Serve as the primary technical contact with Zixi for support, upgrades, and feature rollouts.
- Maintain Zixi server clusters; escalate issues and resolve bugs proactively.
- Playout & Infrastructure Support
- Configure and maintain servers, streaming applications, receivers, and connectivity for programming continuity operations.
- Troubleshoot video/audio signals, software, and hardware components.
- Document workflows, system diagrams, follow and enforce SOPs to reduce service disruptions.
- Team Leadership & Development
- Mentor and guide junior engineers and operational staff.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
- Technology & Innovation
- Lead or support the deployment of new technologies, upgrades, and infrastructure migrations.
- Evaluate and implement emerging technologies, including 5G, cloud platforms, and AI-driven tools.
- Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with industry standards (e.g., Closed Captioning, DVB Subtitles).
- Implement monitoring and QA techniques for consistent, high-quality service delivery.
- Satellite Delivery Operations
- Operate and maintain satellite compression head ends.
- Collaborate with satellite capacity teams and vendors.
- Plan and lead technical initiatives, manage requirements, and define system workflows.
- IT/IP Integration
- Design, implement, and document the IT architecture supporting video acquisition, processing, and distribution.
- Integrate third-party systems including servers, firewalls, transcoders, and cloud services.
- Systems Planning & Delivery Support
- Contribute to cross-functional planning and discussions around satellite and terrestrial delivery.
- Support procurement of hardware, software, and services for IT-related operations.
Qualifications
- 5 years of experience in IT networking and applications, ideally within the broadcast or streaming media industry.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of encoding formats (MPEG-2, H.264, HEVC, AV1), multiplexing (SPTS, MPTS), and transport protocols (UDP, RTP, IGMP, RTMP).
- Hands-on experience with satellite delivery components: modulators, uplink/downlink systems, IRDs (e.g., Synamedia D9800, Sencore Impulse 400D), antennas, LNBs, and conditional access systems (PowerVu, Verimatrix, BISS-1/E).
- Industry certifications in broadcast tech, cloud platforms, or project management (e.g., PMP).
- Hands-on experience with Zixi ZenMaster and cloud-based streaming operations.
- Exceptional communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders with a client-focused attitude.
- Ability to stay current with evolving broadcast and streaming technology trends.
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects.
- Familiarity with budgeting and cost management for technology initiatives.
- Motivated, goal oriented, persistent and a skilled negotiator.
- Ability to negotiate and liaise with customers.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications.
