Simbex · Lebanon, NH · 1 wk ago
HybridFull-time

About the role

The System Design Engineer designs and engineers complex electromechanical devices. This role requires a passion for technology product development, particularly in consumer electronics, and experience collaborating with cross-disciplinary engineering teams. The ideal candidate understands human-centered design and brings strong technical problem-solving, communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills. This role also supports the manufacturing processes for our established line of electromechanical sensor systems (producing ~100,000 units annually). They should also be high-energy, self-motivated, proactive, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

Responsibilities

  • Mechanical Design & Development
    • Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies for including wearable IoT devices, manufacturing equipment, and more using SolidWorks
    • Support hardware design from concept and prototyping through design-for-manufacture, with an eye toward size, weight, and performance constraints
    • Isolate and iterate on component/feature designs with a constant eye toward system integration
    • Conduct analyses including mechanical (e.g. stress and tolerance stack-up) and design risks (e.g. failure modes)
    • Work with rapid prototyping (3D printing, CNC) and manual fabrication to iterate on designs quickly
    • Create and maintain engineering drawings, and BOM updates
  • System Integration & Testing
    • Support integration of mechanical, electrical, and firmware subsystems into cohesive products
    • Assist in developing and executing verification and validation test plans and procedures
    • Collect, analyze, and document test data against functional and performance specifications
    • Identify and troubleshoot mechanical and system-level issues during bring-up and field testing
    • Develop and execute verification and validation test plans covering functional, environmental, and durability requirements
  • Data Collection
    • Design and execute structured data collection protocols in lab and field environments
    • Set up and operate data acquisition systems (DAQ, oscilloscope, serial logging) to capture outputs across test conditions
    • Analyze and interpret collected datasets to assess system performance, identify anomalies, and support design decisions
  • Manufacturing Process Support
    • Monitor manufacturing activities for electromechanical sensor systems, providing engineering support to troubleshoot and resolve production issues promptly
    • Maintain and troubleshoot electromechanical manufacturing fixtures and test equipment, utilizing both hands-on and remote methods
    • Analyze production data to identify trends, lead root cause analysis (RCA) efforts for failures, and proactively support manufacturing sites to maximize up-time
    • Interface with internal teams and external suppliers to address manufacturing-related concerns that arise
    • Perform annual and as-needed service visits for equipment installation and maintenance. Requires ~5% travel, both domestic and Mexico
  • Documentation & Process
    • Maintain complete and current project documentation in accordance with Simbex's Quality Management System
    • Prepare engineering analyses and present findings to cross-functional teams
    • Lead and support design reviews for production releases

Required Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or closely related field
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D modeling, assemblies, and engineering drawings
  • Understanding of GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis and design-for-manufacture principles
  • Hands-on prototyping experience: 3D printing, manual machining, and other fabrication methods
  • Analog and digital signal acquisition and measurement experience
  • Electrical fundamentals including wiring and simple schematic interpretation
  • Familiarity with verification and validation processes, test plan development, and documentation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable presenting to cross-functional teams
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with wearable, consumer electronics, or medical device product development
  • Exposure to IoT hardware: enclosure design for PCBs, connectors and cable routing
  • Familiarity with Agile and stage-gate product development processes
  • SQL and Python script proficiency and understanding
