About the role

The Chief Digital and Information Officer (CDIO) provides visionary leadership for the digital transformation of UCI Health, a $5 billion academic health system. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President, the CDIO oversees information technology operations management for patient care, research, education, and administration.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a cohesive digital health strategy aligned with UCI Health's mission of clinical excellence, research advancement, and medical education.
  • Oversee enterprise IT, digital platforms, data and analytics, cybersecurity, research informatics, and technology infrastructure.
  • Ensure secure, efficient, and technology-driven improvements in health outcomes, operational performance, and strategic growth.
  • Collaborate with clinical, academic, and administrative leaders to enable advanced analytics, clinical trials, and translational research through informatics tools and secure data environments.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, talent development, and change readiness across the enterprise.
  • Plan, assess new technologies, deploy to ensure optimal interoperability, value creation, and appropriate cyber security.

Requirements

Required Education: A minimum of a Master's degree in business, hospital administration, computer science, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred: A graduate degree, e.g., MBA, MS, etc.

Required Experience: A minimum of fifteen (15) years of progressive experience within information technology, with a minimum of ten (10) years of significant IT senior leadership experience, preferably within complex health institution environments. Ten (10) years of progressive leadership experience in information technology, digital transformation, or health informatics. Five (5) years in senior or executive leadership roles within complex healthcare delivery systems, ideally including academic medical centers or integrated health systems. Demonstrated success leading large-scale EHR implementations, digital health transformations, or enterprise analytics initiatives. Experience overseeing clinical and operational technologies (EHR, ERP, PACS, RCM, CRM, etc.). Strong track record in data governance, enterprise data warehousing, and enabling AI/machine learning applications in healthcare.

Qualifications

Technical Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of the education, research, patient care, and public service mission of universities and the corresponding academic and administrative practices, policies, and current challenges. Business principles and techniques of administration, organization, and management, including an in-depth understanding of the key business issues that exist in the medical education, medical research, and health care industries, including: Strategic and operational planning, Health care economics, Personnel administration, Federal, state, and local laws, Marketing, financial and cost analysis, Trends in the health care, medical research, and medical education industries, Business operations as it pertains to third-party billing and reimbursement activities and other financial activities. Information technologies including data processing methods and procedures; computing software, hardware, and network systems supporting research, education, systems security, and healthcare enterprises. Broad knowledge of the latest and evolving developments in advanced technologies and information systems. General knowledge of and experience in a broad range of clinical, academic, and administrative information technologies and systems, including technology tools to directly support research, educational, and patient care as well as administrative support to core university activities. Enterprise and other application systems design and development process, including requirements analysis, feasibility studies, software design, programming, pilot testing, installation, evaluation, and operational management. Applicable external regulatory requirements (e.g., JCAHO, HIPAA, NIST, FERPA, 21 CFR Part 11) and their application to the IT area.
