About The Role

We are looking for a Functional Safety Engineer with exposure to both system and software safety development, and hands-on experience applying ISO 26262 at the software level. You will be responsible for both system and software safety development across our Vehicle OS platform — working with safety requirements, analyses, and verification activities that span the full V-cycle. You will collaborate closely with software, hardware, and systems engineering teams to ensure safety is correctly specified, implemented, and verified end-to-end. This is a generalist safety engineering role that values breadth across the safety lifecycle, practical experience delivering safety work products, and the ability to engage with software teams on safety requirements and implementation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform system-level safety activities — technical safety concept development and safety requirement derivation — per ISO 26262 Parts 3 and 4
  • Conduct system-level safety analyses including system FMEA, FTA, and dependent failure analysis to identify and mitigate risks across the system architecture
  • Support ASIL decomposition and safety requirement allocation across system, hardware, and software elements per ISO 26262 Part 9
  • Understand low level firmware, safety concepts, derivation of FuSa analysis at platform level is key
  • Derive software safety requirements from Technical Safety Concepts and ensure correct flow-down to software architecture and implementation
  • Review software architecture and design for ASIL compliance — partitioning strategies, safety mechanisms, and freedom from interference between software components
  • Perform or support software safety analyses (SW-FTA, SW-FMEA) and dependent failure analysis for freedom from interference
  • Develop and maintain software safety plans and contribute to software safety case closure per ISO 26262 Part 6
  • Guide software development teams on compliant practices including coding standards (MISRA, CERT) and structural coverage criteria
  • Maintain end-to-end safety traceability from safety goals through to verification evidence using tools such as JAMA, DOORS, or equivalent
  • Engage with external assessors and certification bodies; support third-party audits and confirmation measures

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline
  • 3+ years of functional safety experience with a primary focus on software -level safety development and some exposure to systems-level safety per ISO 26262 Part 6
  • Hands-on experience producing safety work products across the V-cycle
  • Experience collaborating across software, hardware, and systems engineering teams to implement safety requirements end-to-end
  • Previously worked on OS, Device drivers and Platform level Safety is value added
  • Familiarity with requirements management and traceability tools (JAMA, DOORS, Polarion, or equivalent)

Qualifications

  • Nice to have:
  • Familiarity with software safety analyses (SW-FTA, SW-FMEA) or software safety case development at the application or platform level — this is a strong differentiator for this role
  • Familiarity with software tool classification and qualification activities per ISO 26262 Part 8
  • Experience across multiple vehicle domains — ADAS or propulsion or chassis, or body electronics — with an understanding of domain-specific safety challenges
  • Exposure to ASPICE (Automotive SPICE) software process assessments alongside ISO 26262
  • Experience working with third-party assessors through product assessment or audit cycles

Skills

  • Familiarity with ISO 26262
  • Experience with safety requirements and analysis tools
  • Collaboration skills with software, hardware, and systems engineering teams
  • Technical writing and documentation skills

Benefits

At Applied Intuition, compensation at eligible roles includes base salary, equity, and benefits. Base salary is a single component of the total compensation package, which may also include equity in the form of options and/or restricted stock units, comprehensive health, dental, vision, life and disability insurance coverage, 401k retirement benefits with employer match, learning and wellness stipends, and paid time off.
