About the role

The Power System Operations Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has two Professional Supervisor vacancies. This frontline supervisor role oversees personnel operating the power system, including transmission and distribution operations, generation dispatch, outage management, field response, communications, and related data collection.

You will direct and train personnel in policies, procedures, and the use of system tools such as EMS, ADMS, OMS, and other future control room tools for centralized utility operations. The role coordinates generation, transmission, and distribution system activities to ensure safe, reliable, and economic grid operations, initiates emergency response, and leads a competitive, service-oriented work culture with a strong safety mindset.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary point of contact during normal and emergency operations.
• Review energy and grid resource availability and scheduled daily work plans.
• Coordinate execution of work plans ensuring compliance with safety and operational requirements.
• Monitor energy resources, power flow, and voltages; direct adjustments for optimum grid performance.
• Check system logs and reports to ensure data accuracy and follow up with appropriate process areas.
• Supervise operators and dispatchers, providing coaching and mentoring on safety, policies, and procedures.
• Review, verify, and modify work schedule assignments as required.
• Prepare employee performance evaluations.
• Prepare, review, and adjust switching orders and hold-offs based on current system conditions.
• Coordinate hold-off requests and monitor repair order status.
• Ensure system displays and diagrams are accurate and coordinate updates.
• Act as the primary point of contact for executive communications during high-profile incidents.
• Coordinate with first responder agencies (e.g., Fire, Public Safety, Civil Defense) and other utilities during emergencies.
• Address elevated customer questions and concerns.
• Assist in gathering data for interruption analysis and participate in IMT emergency response.
• Develop procedures and policies for operational technology systems.
• Perform research and data collection for reports, analyses, and studies.
• Conduct field investigations as needed.
• Participate in company emergency response activities, including preparation.

Requirements

• Thorough knowledge of electrical utility, generation, transmission, and distribution systems, typically acquired through operational experience.
• Working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications (e.g., MS Excel, MS Word).
• Thorough knowledge of policies and procedures in documents such as the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Accident Prevention Manual, and General Information Manual.
• Ability to work a rotating shift.
• Ability to identify and distinguish colors, including shades, hues, and tints.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to handle difficult and sensitive issues with tact, courtesy, and discretion.
• Supervisory and leadership skills to work with diverse individuals, occasionally dealing with sensitive or confrontational issues.
• Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
• Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license and meet company driving standards.

Qualifications

• 3–5 years of experience operating generation, transmission, and distribution systems.

Pay

The hiring range for this position is $109,900.00 to $142,600.00. The selected candidate will be placed according to skills and qualifications.
