System Development Engineer, System Integrations and Data, Amazon Leo
Amazon Leo is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite broadband network. Its mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet to customers and communities around the world, and we've designed the system with the capacity, flexibility, and performance to serve a wide range of customers, from individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.
About the role
We are seeking an innovative and solution-oriented System Development Engineer (SysDE II) to join our team to develop solutions that integrate machines and equipment with enterprise manufacturing systems, build custom manufacturing applications, and deploy applied AI within an active satellite manufacturing facility. This role combines hardware, software, OT, and IT stack development to connect plant-floor assets with enterprise platforms, create purpose-built applications that streamline production workflows, and build intelligent solutions that unlock value from manufacturing data.
In this position, you will primarily work on integrating machines, robots, PLCs, SCADA systems, and production equipment with enterprise systems such as MES (Manufacturing Execution System), enabling real-time data flow between the shop floor and higher-level business systems. You will build custom manufacturing applications such as operations dashboards, digital work instructions, traceability tools, and production monitoring systems tailored to the unique needs of satellite manufacturing. You will also design and deploy applied AI solutions that leverage equipment and process data to drive predictive maintenance, automated quality inspection, process optimization, and intelligent manufacturing workflows.
Responsibilities
- Bridge the gap between IT and OT environments by integrating plant-floor equipment (PLCs, SCADA, robots, CNC machines, torque tools) with enterprise systems such as MES using OPC UA, MQTT, and REST APIs
- Build and maintain real-time data pipelines that converge OT and IT layers, enabling end-to-end production visibility, traceability, and data-driven decision-making across the manufacturing stack
- Develop custom manufacturing applications (dashboards, digital work instructions, production monitoring, and quality traceability) tailored to satellite manufacturing operations, serving as the connective tissue between shop-floor systems and enterprise platforms
- Design, train, and deploy applied AI solutions for predictive maintenance, automated quality inspection, anomaly detection, process optimization, and intelligent chatbots leveraging data from both OT and IT systems to drive actionable insights for Production Operations
- Partner cross-functionally with controls engineers to ensure equipment-level connectivity and PLC/SCADA integration
- Collaborate with manufacturing engineers to translate process requirements and domain expertise into scalable digital solutions
- Work alongside network development engineers to architect reliable, secure industrial network infrastructure that supports OT/IT convergence
Requirements
- Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design, or experience in professional, non-internship software development
- Experience building data pipelines or automated ETL processes
- Experience integrating industrial equipment (PLCs, SCADA, robots, CNC machines) using protocols such as OPC UA, MQTT, or REST APIs
- Familiarity with manufacturing execution systems (MES) and industrial automation concepts
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in Space Vehicle/Satellite Operations, Space Communications or related industry
- Experience working with PyTorch or JAX software, or experience in developing and deploying LLMs in production on GPUs, Neuron, TPU or other AI acceleration hardware
- Experience building production software applications or understanding software development, distributed systems, and systems architecture
- Experience with AWS or cloud technologies
- Experience with AI/ML technologies
- Exposure to computer vision for automated quality inspection
- Familiarity with ISA-95 or similar IT/OT integration frameworks and standards
- Experience in Industrial networking and communications
