System Designer (Heat Pumps, Residential)
About the role
We are hiring a System Designer to join our in-house technical team. This role involves completing Manual J/S with HVAC design software, scoping electrical requirements and upgrades to NEC 220.83 standards, specifying water heater and battery upgrades, and scoping weatherization projects. Designers will work closely with home comfort advisors, sales teams, and installation managers to ensure systems are designed according to customer specifications, building codes, and energy efficiency standards. This role also supports the development of design documents, plans, specifications, and quotes, ensuring high-quality solutions are delivered by our Field Operations team. Designers will establish quality control processes to ensure all designs and heat pump solutions meet Zero Homes' rigorous standards.
Responsibilities
- Complete Manual J/S with HVAC design software
- Scoping electrical requirements and upgrades to NEC 220.83 standards
- Specify water heater and battery upgrades
- Scoping weatherization projects
- Work closely with home comfort advisors, sales teams, and installation managers
- Support the development of design documents, plans, specifications, and quotes
- Establish quality control processes to ensure designs meet Zero Homes' standards
Requirements
- 2+ years of system design experience and/or relevant deep technical experience, including load calculations, equipment selection, and/or energy modeling
- Deep understanding of residential buildings (Building Science, residential mechanical, electrical, plumbing (MEP), heat pump technology, and heat pump products)
- Fluency in data-driven tooling and software, such as spreadsheets, python, etc.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills; we're looking for team players
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field preferred but not required

- BPI-Analyst/Professional
- HVAC sales, home energy assessment, or in-field installation experience
- Ability to speak Spanish or other languages to support customers or partners whose native language is not English
