About the role

The System Administrator is a senior-level technical role responsible for leading advanced IT operations, infrastructure management, and strategic technology initiatives across the organization. This position builds upon foundational and intermediate IT responsibilities with a focus on systems architecture, automation, security, and cross-departmental collaboration. The System Administrator serves as a technical mentor, project lead, and subject-matter expert, ensuring the reliability, scalability, and security of IT systems while supporting organizational growth and innovation. The role remains front-facing for technical support of all PAA staff.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable infrastructure solutions across on-premises and cloud environments (Windows Server, Azure, Hyper-V, Unraid).
  • Automate system deployments, patching, and monitoring using scripting tools (PowerShell, Bash), RMM tools, and Microsoft Deployment Toolkit.
  • Lead hardware refresh cycles, server and network performance tuning, capacity planning, and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Manage and optimize Microsoft 365 and Azure AD environments, including licensing, conditional access, identity protection, and compliance configurations.
  • Integrate cloud services with on-premises systems and support hybrid identity solutions.
  • Lead security initiatives including endpoint protection, encryption, vulnerability management, HIPAA compliance, and end-user asset ownership audits.
  • Develop and enforce IT security policies and procedures in collaboration with leadership.
  • Plan and lead IT projects such as system upgrades, migrations, and new technology rollouts.
  • Coordinate with vendors, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to ensure timely project delivery.
  • Mentor and support Tech I and II staff through training, documentation, and technical guidance.
  • Develop and maintain SOPs, technical documentation, and knowledge base articles.
  • Identify inefficiencies in IT operations and implement automation or process enhancements.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and make recommendations for adoption.
  • Serve as the final escalation point for complex technical issues, providing expert-level troubleshooting across systems, networks, and applications.
  • Provide coverage for IT leadership or colleagues during periods of PTO or illness.
  • Occasional travel to satellite locations for asset handoffs and troubleshooting.
  • Responsible for device wiping, secure disposal, and final disposition of IT assets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent training and experience.
  • 5+ years in IT operations or systems administration, with demonstrated progression in responsibilities and technical expertise, preferably in a healthcare setting.
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, CompTIA Security+, MCSA/MCSE, Jamf 300+, or equivalent training and experience (preferred).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership abilities and proficiency in creating clear, thorough documentation.
  • Deep understanding of Windows Server, Active Directory, Azure, Microsoft 365, ticketing systems, and RMM tools.
  • Experience with virtualization (Hyper-V), networking, and security best practices.
  • Proficiency in both Windows and macOS environments, as well as Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Physical Demands

The role requires regular sitting, standing, walking, and use of hands. Occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling may be required. The employee must occasionally work in a standing position for long periods. Local travel during the day is required, with potential for out-of-area or overnight travel for conferences. Air travel may also be required.
