Synthetic Organic Chemistry Postdoc
Los Alamos National Laboratory’s High Explosives Science and Technology group (Q-5) is seeking a motivated organic chemist to synthesize novel N-containing aliphatic and aromatic heterocycles for applications in energetic materials, including explosives and propellants.
About the role
This postdoctoral position involves designing, executing, documenting, and analyzing organic chemical reactions to isolate target compounds. The selected applicant will work independently and collaborate with experimental and computational scientists. The term is two years, with the possibility of a third-year extension, and a start date between August 2026 and January 2027.
Responsibilities
- Synthesize novel N-containing aliphatic and aromatic heterocycles for energetic materials applications.
- Perform separation, purification, and isolation of target compounds.
- Characterize compounds using infrared, 1H NMR, and 13C{1H} NMR spectroscopies, as well as HPLC and mass spectrometry (if experienced).
- Work safely with energetic materials in a rigorous safety environment.
- Collaborate effectively in a team environment with other scientists.
- Document and analyze organic chemical reactions and results.
- Contribute to publications in chemical journals and national security projects.
Requirements
- U.S. citizenship (required for Q clearance).
- Ph.D. in organic chemistry or a related field, completed within the last five years.
- Experience in organic chemical synthesis, separation, purification, and isolation techniques.
- Proficiency in characterizing organic compounds using infrared, 1H NMR, and 13C{1H} NMR spectroscopies.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Willingness to learn and practice safe handling of energetic materials.
Qualifications
- Experience in novel organic synthesis and developing new synthetic pathways.
- Experience with the safe handling of reactive materials.
Work Location
This position is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
