Salary: $40.28 - $64.45 hourly / $83,790 - $134,063 annually. This position is a Pay Band C11.

About the role

This position exists to ensure the timely, accurate, and actionable collection, management, and analysis of syndromic surveillance data for the New Mexico Department of Health. The role is essential for monitoring emerging health trends, identifying potential outbreaks, and maintaining high-quality data flows from healthcare facilities and the state health information exchange. By applying epidemiological methods, overseeing on-boarding and data quality processes, and developing analytical tools and reports, the position strengthens the department's capacity to respond quickly to public health events and support data-driven decision-making.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the full lifecycle of syndromic surveillance data, including coordinating with healthcare facilities and the health information exchange to ensure data completeness, timeliness, and accuracy.
  • Conduct ongoing epidemiological analysis to identify trends, support public health decision-making, and detect potential outbreaks.
  • Oversee the syndromic onboarding workflow, monitor system outages, and approve facilities for production.
  • Maintain high-quality reporting tools such as dashboards and data quality tracking systems.
  • Develop and disseminate routine surveillance reports.
  • Provide HL7 training and troubleshooting support.
  • Create communications for data users and respond to complex data requests from internal programs and research partners.
  • Oversee Emergency Department data processing and ensure timely submission to the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP), supporting statewide healthcare utilization monitoring and reporting.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a skilled epidemiologist with strong technical abilities and experience in managing and analyzing public health data systems. A background in epidemiology, biostatistics, informatics, or a related public health field paired with hands-on experience in health data systems is preferred. Other preferred skills include clear communication, adaptability, and experience in developing tools, reports, and training materials that enhance the value and usability of public health data.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualification: Master's Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Sciences, Social Sciences, or Statistics and one (1) year in Public Health to include data analysis and linking methodology. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

  • Travel time approximately 5-10%.
  • Extended time using a personal computer and sitting or standing at desk.

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement and all terms/conditions of that agreement apply and must be adhered to.
