Primary responsibilities include receiving, screening and transferring high volume calls to intended recipients (patients, departments, staff, or physicians) appropriately, efficiently and in a professional and courteous manner. Maintain an accurate database of emergency codes, call codes for the organization through overhead paging system, and page code teams including physicians. Manage on-call schedules and contact database. Page on-call physicians as needed through multiple avenues. Functions as an answering service for physicians, departments, and Hospice. Monitor alarm systems, fire panels, generators, surgery gases, HVAC and the weather channel. Communicates information regarding emergency/disaster exercises and events throughout organization. Serves the health system as the main information source and emergency contact. Protect patient privacy by following HIPAA regulations, as well as maintaining confidential information within the hospital systems. Requires extensive sitting. Ability to train and direct new staff learning process in regards to job functions EDUCATION The Switchboard Operator must be a high school graduate or hold an equivalent qualification. Experience Experience with a multi-line switchboard/PBX system preferred. Minimum two years secretarial experience. Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Accurate computer keyboard and typing skills, minimum 35 wpm. Ability to assess, problem solve and work in multiple systems simultaneously. Active listening and clear communication skills. Good organizational skills. Ability to perform repetitive tasksAbility to work without close supervisionAbility to make decisions based on written documentation or verbal instructionsAbility to diffuse customer aggravationAble to work irregular schedules including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. WORKING CONDITIONS - ADA INFORMATION Requires substantial amount of time sitting at a desk. Switchboard Operators are subject to working irregular schedules (including weekends and holidays). At times, due to workload, Switchboard Operators are subject to high levels of stress. Position requires considerable mental effort and logical thought processing. Lifting not to exceed 25lbs.
