About the role
We are seeking a Swing Technician to join VStar Entertainment Group’s Touring Theatrical Crew. The Swing Technician will assist across departments as needed, focusing on scene changes, show presentations, and quick changes. They will learn backstage track as a replacement for other technicians, assist with regular maintenance, and adhere to safety protocols.
Responsibilities
- Aid department heads and local crews in carpentry, electrics, sound, props, or wardrobe departments.
- Maintain the artistic "look" of the show from performance and operation standpoints.
- Memorize and perform backstage deck track assigned to the role, participating in cue track department rotation.
- Assist with troubleshooting show elements during performances.
- Install show elements as directed by management.
- Train local crews in backstage deck track.
- Direct local crews during load in and load out.
- Assist with loading and unloading trailers and show assets.
- Assist other departments with assembly and disassembly of the stage set and equipment.
- Work flexible schedules for work calls, special events, rehearsals, maintenance, and performances.
- Establish and maintain swing training and backup plans for departmental continuity.
- Support other departments, production management, artistic management, and show support staff during rehearsals, training, load-in, load-out, and performances.
- Manage inventory of show supplies, working with department heads and tour management.
- Create, update, and maintain cue sheets and show documentation.
- Implement preventative maintenance routines and inspections.
- Adhere to OSHA regulations and participate in safety classes and emergency rescue procedures.
Requirements
- Related experience or combination of training and/or education in technical theater, specifically carpentry, electrics, sound, props, and/or wardrobe.
- Experience as a deck hand in backstage settings.
- Knowledge of hand and power tools.
- Basic understanding of theatrical terms and directions.
- Ability to navigate a crowded backstage area.
- Proficiency in basic math and problem-solving.
- Willingness to work extended and irregular hours.
- Touring experience preferred but not required.
- Active IATSE union membership or willingness to join.
- Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
- Passport and international travel eligibility.
- Background check clearance.
