About the Role

This position supports the implementation of the Competitive and/or Recreational Swimming Program under the guidance of the Head Coach. The Assistant Coach will help deliver instruction to swimmers throughout the season and during swim clinics, aligning with YMCA philosophy, aquatic guidelines, and competitive sports standards. The role contributes to the YMCA’s vision of strengthening community foundations through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Teach all swim groups by facilitating training and practice plans developed by the Head Coach.
  • Evaluate swimmers’ individual goals; provide feedback for improvement and recognition.
  • Support volunteer recruitment, parent and swimmer communication, and input on team rosters and meet lineups.
  • Engage in community involvement, fundraising efforts, and events.
  • Maintain records of achievements, progress reports, and skill development.
  • Attend scheduled meetings and represent the YMCA at meets and community events.
  • Ensure the safety of all participants at all times.
  • Maintain current knowledge of emergency procedures; report incidents in a complete and timely manner.
  • Promote the team philosophy and foster a positive, friendly practice environment consistent with the YMCA Mission.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 16.
  • Background in competitive swimming as a coach or swimmer.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • One year of coaching experience with various ages (helpful).
  • Excellent teaching skills with expert knowledge of training and stroke development.
  • Exemplify YMCA ideals, leadership qualities, and a professional image.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups from all social and economic segments.
  • YMCA Leader certification preferred (within the first 90 days).
  • YMCA Swim Instructor Certification and/or YMCA Lifeguard Certification.
  • Must pass pre-employment criminal background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle record.
  • Within 30 days of hire: Child Abuse Prevention, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens training.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather) and extreme heat (non-weather). The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. The role requires regular sitting, standing, walking, talking, and hearing, with occasional reaching, stooping, kneeling, or crouching.
