Swim Instructor - West Park YMCA
Position Summary
The Swim instructor plans and delivers effective swim instruction, using the Y of the USA swim curriculum, in a designated program area for YMCA members, program participants and non-members. Instructors must be knowledgeable, punctual, professional, and show concern for class participants.
Essential Functions
- Demonstrate skills and explain them clearly to class members.
- Instructs at the appropriate skill and age level for the class.
- Plans each teaching class in advance, prepares to start class on time, with proper material, equipment, and in proper attire.
- Observes all YMCA attendance and safety rules when teaching classes.
- Starts and ends class on time.
- Maintain positive rapport with participants and parents of participants.
- Conducts all classes in accordance with YMCA of Cleveland standards and guidelines.
- Notifies supervisor, in a timely manner, of any problems relating to the class or program area.
- Is responsible for the safety of all participants, knows emergency procedures and the location of all emergency equipment.
- Gathers periodic participant feedback through distribution written evaluations provided by the Program Director.
- Leaves program area in a safe "closed down" manner.
- Informs students of class cancellations and make-ups in a timely manner; also is responsible for obtaining a qualified substitute as necessary.
- Must be able to evaluate swimming skills and place participants in appropriate class.
- Keeps the pool area neat and clean.
- Is visibly involved with members, volunteers and staff in a positive, friendly manner that communicates and demonstrates the YMCA’s core values of caring, honest, respect and responsibility.
- Follows all established policies and procedures, including but not limited to, safety practices and personnel policies.
- Participates in and supports association events and fund-raising activities.
- Sets up and maintains all equipment (rescue and member used), and assigned areas as outlined by the employer and supervisor.
Qualifications
- Experience: Demonstrated public speaking ability and customer service orientation towards individuals and groups of people.
- At least 6 months of instructor experience in designated aquatic area preferred.
- Certification(s) & Requirements: CPR and First Aid certification and Safety training required within 30 days of hire. Current swim instructor (WSI or YSI) certification preferred prior to hire. Or must be obtained within the first (3 months) 90 days of hire.
- Technical Skills And Knowledge: Have knowledge of pool readings and chemistry. Have a working knowledge of teaching aids: Kickboards, pull buoys, diving rings, etc. Have a general knowledge of anatomy and exercise physiology. Demonstrate commitment to the mission, cause of the YMCA, and uphold its values and ethics.
- Ability to work effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions.
- Willingness and ability to be a mandated reporter for any signs or suspicion of child abuse and neglect. All employees are required to follow the child abuse and neglect reporting process: completion of Suspected Child Abuse/Neglect reporting form, calling children protective services (696-Kids) and notifying your immediate supervisor, branch executive, risk management and human resources department (s).
