SWE II Backend Engineer

About the role

The role is a foundational team member with the opportunity to work on all aspects of the application and shape the technical future of CivilGrid. It is a hybrid role with expectations that you are working from our Boston, MA office at least 2 days per week if hired.

What You'll Do

  • Design and build end-to-end features, covering everything from database models to user-facing components using React
  • Tackle a variety of areas: web and mobile applications, mapping interfaces, data processing pipelines, algorithmic relevancy, and real-time collaboration tools
  • Profile and tune performance across the entire stack to ensure efficient and responsive systems
  • Implement and maintain analytics, health monitoring, alerts, and logging to maintain operational visibility and system reliability

What You'll Bring

  • 3+ years of experience working with JavaScript or TypeScript, particularly with Node.js (or equivalent frameworks)
  • 1+ years of experience working with React
  • Start Up Ready: Autonomous, moves fast, takes initiative without being asked
  • Experience working on a SaaS product
  • Postgres experience is a plus
  • Familiarity with geospatial frameworks (PostGIS, GeoJSON, map rendering libraries, etc.) is also a plus
  • Conduct code reviews and offer constructive feedback to help grow the team’s technical capabilities
  • Strong verbal and written communication, able to articulate ideas clearly and collaborate effectively
  • A degree in Computer Science, Civil Engineering, or a related field (B.S. or M.S.)

Career Path

The base salary range for this role in Boston is $132,000 - $178,600. Base salary is only one part of your total compensation package at CivilGrid, which also includes meaningful early-stage equity, comprehensive benefits, and the opportunity to shape a category-defining company. The base salary range listed above may encompass various levels and/or geographic locations; final offers are determined based on the candidate's experience, skills, level, and work location.
