Sustainability Zero Waste Intern

About the Role

Support the college’s goal of becoming a zero waste campus where diversion of materials from reaching the landfill is at or beyond 90%. The position requires a hardworking, detail-orientated, focused, and enthusiastic individual.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily scheduled waste, recycling, and food/compost pick-ups.
• Manage all aspects of the compost program, including educational outreach and site tours.
• Sort, load, and move materials; make deliveries and pick-ups on and off campus.
• Support surplus property and redistribution efforts.
• Provide exemplary customer service and maintain appropriate documentation within systems.
• Work events the Center for Sustainability is involved in, including running games and interacting with people.
• Ensure tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and to the satisfaction of job requirements.

Requirements

• Current student.
• Availability to work 16-20 hours per week during regular work hours, primarily days with occasional evenings and weekends for special events.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to pass MVR and background check.
• Ability to lift and/or move up to 150 pounds with designated equipment and/or assistance.
• Ability to work independently and accept direction on assigned tasks.

Qualifications

• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Detail-oriented, focused, and enthusiastic.
• Effective communication skills with diverse groups, including faculty, students, administrators, support staff, and contractors.
• Understanding of sustainability as it relates to materials management and life cycle analysis.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.

Pay

Starting salary range: $15.68 per hour.

Schedule

Monday-Friday, up to 20 hours per week. Primarily days with occasional evenings and weekends for special events.
