About the role

The Survey Party Chief will perform surveying and mapping duties under the direction of an engineer, surveyor, cartographer, or photogrammetrist to obtain data for construction, map making, boundary location, mining, or other purposes. This role involves calculating mapmaking information, creating maps from source data (surveying notes, aerial photography, satellite data), and verifying the accuracy of topographical maps. The position works closely with project engineers on transportation and civil/site projects, including roadways, bridges, parks, commercial and private developments, as well as with land survey crews on topographic, boundary, construction stake-out, and as-built surveys.

Responsibilities

• Provide data relevant to the shape, contour, location, elevation, or dimension of land or land features.
• Compile geographic, political, and cultural information and prepare maps of large areas; record survey results, verify data accuracy, and prepare plots, maps, and reports.
• Collect field data and calculate mapmaking information for computations and computer-aided drafting.
• Research legal records, analyze evidence of previous boundaries, and determine boundary line locations.
• Utilize Global Positioning System (GPS), laptops, and surveying software.
• Oversee and accompany field crews, organizing operations and ensuring data accuracy.
• Review project specifications and confer with engineers and surveyors regarding plan preparation, testing, field conditions, and design changes.
• Perform non-routine assignments involving substantial variety and complexity.
• Conduct surveying duties not requiring licensure, compute volumes, and prepare graphs.
• Assume supervisory responsibilities on a job-specific basis.
• Perform other related duties as assigned, including occasional travel and night shift work.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 3+ years of surveying experience.
• Knowledge of all crew positions and capability to utilize all surveying equipment.
• Experience working with local clients at the county and state level (preferred).
• Computer Assisted Drafting (CAD) software experience.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a motor vehicle screening and background check.

Skills

• Proficiency in software programs for field data collection and data organization.
• Strong mathematical skills, including algebra, geometry, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume calculations.

Working Conditions

• 90% fieldwork, requiring bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting/carrying objects up to 25 lbs.
• Exposure to outdoor conditions: heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid environments.
• 10% office work, generally sedentary with occasional standing and walking.
• Some travel and night shift work required.
