Surveyor Party Chief

About the role

Thompson Engineering has a full‑time opportunity for a Survey Party Chief. The Survey Party Chief oversees the survey crew in the daily responsibilities of the land surveying department and reports survey data to the Survey Team Manager. The role requires travel to support various project needs.

Responsibilities

• Oversees the daily functions of the survey crew.
• Responsible for the set‑up and completion of the survey crew on job sites under the direct supervision of the Professional Land Surveyor and/or job supervisor.
• Ensures the proper reporting of daily work logs to the Organization Manager.
• Reduces survey data to the Organization Manager.
• Interprets blueprints, plans, and deeds to effectively lead the survey crew.
• Drives company vehicle to and from job sites.
• Operates all survey equipment and interprets data to report information to the Organization Manager.
• Understands and computes field calculations related to the survey data collected.
• Effectively manages the time and schedules of the survey crew.
• Maintains on‑time and consistent attendance.

Requirements

• Five (5) years verifiable experience running a crew in surveying commercial and/or heavy industrial construction stakeout.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to read and comprehend measurements.
• Intermediate math skills, including trigonometry and coordinate geometry.
• Effective communication skills.
• Ability to travel and stay overnight as required by the Survey Department workload.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work outdoors in field conditions up to 100% of the time.
• Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lb.
• Required to remain standing for at least eight (8) hours per day and walk long distances.
• Must be able to bend, stoop, and climb on a ladder.
• Must be able to drive a company vehicle to and from job sites.
