Specific Responsibilities

  • Works with the Project Superintendent and jobsite work crews to ensure that all survey conducted for determination of construction stakeout are done correctly.
  • Oversees existing site surveys, as-built surveys, and control line surveys for accurate completion of projects.
  • Participates in pre-survey meetings with Project Managers and contractor representatives; assigns and monitors surveyor’s work.
  • Assembles field data, reduces field notes and makes survey calculations.
  • Assembles pertinent reference data before field surveys.
  • PLOTS field data, using survey computer programs, constructs maps, and prepares reports.
  • Establishes control for alignment and benchmarks; makes required line and elevation ties to existing centerlines and U.S.G.S. benchmarks.
  • Makes vertical control surveys for aerial surveys; determines elevations for various surfaces.
  • Makes topographical surveys and site surveys for the design and development of docks, buildings, roads, and bridges.
  • Maintains records and prepares reports appropriate for the needs of the project and for future retention.

  • Performs other related administrative and technical duties as may be assigned or requested by immediate supervision (such as certification training, safety training, procedure review, etc.).

Position Requirements

  • A B.S. Degree in Surveying or related discipline and a minimum of 3 years’ experience, or equivalent work experience as a Surveyor is required.
  • Prior hands-on work experience in heavy civil or marine construction is preferred but not required.
  • The incumbent must have a working knowledge of Project Construction, Principles of Surveying, Engineering & Project Standards, Surveying Software, State Law regarding Plats, Property Lines and Survey Monuments, and Safety & Environmental Compliance.
  • In addition, the incumbent must have strong knowledge of mathematics, survey computer programs, and survey computations applicable to the job accurately and record results legibly.
  • Strong knowledge of the use of mechanical drawing instruments.
  • Strong knowledge of the nomenclature and symbols of drafting.
  • Strong knowledge of surveying instruments and GPS equipment and their use and care.
  • Ability to carry out written and oral directions.
  • Ability to do transit and level work, which may include application of total station instruments to survey projects.
  • Ability to reduce and plot field notes to make computations.
  • Ability to make engineering sketches, maps, and drawings.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
  • Ability to travel out of town as needed.

Physical/Mental Requirements

  • The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
  • The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required.
  • This includes hard hat, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices (PFD’s) or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.
  • The Surveyor Must Also Be Capable Of Walking, stepping, climbing, or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, and normally involves physically getting onto and off of work barges, boats, vessels, or dock facilities of varying heights and access parameters.
  • Standing, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing, or sitting for long periods of time.
  • Working in confined spaces.
  • Working at elevated heights.
  • Lifting objects up to 50 lbs. as required.
  • Carrying 50 lb. objects as required.
  • Adapting to extreme temperature changes.
  • Adapting to outdoor conditions and prolonged exposure.
  • Remaining calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident and as directed by the Safety Representative or other management personnel.
  • Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency situation arise.
