About the role
A Survey Instrument Man/Woman is required to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of basic survey layout. The individual in this position is well versed with field note creation and note taking. The position possesses supervisory skills and a working knowledge of standard field procedures.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the supervision of the Survey Rodman to achieve Company Goals
- Familiar with: Survey equipment, company survey standards, and tolerances
- Know general company policies as they relate to field operations, field workflow procedures, and field problem solving techniques
- Know proper record keeping and time keeping
- Be able to perform staking and stake marking for a variety of standard types of surveys
- Know how to create and update JHA's as they relate to each Survey task
- Have a general familiarity with McGough survey standards as they relate to survey tasks
- Field Operations: Have basic knowledge of a wide variety of surveying field operation methods including but not limited to: repeating observations and precision measurements using tapes and theodolites; construction layout methods and procedures
- Know the procedures and acceptable tolerances in relation to the total station
- Know how to create, reduce, and check orderly field notes for standard surveying operations such as but not limited to: leveling, topographic mapping, construction layout, as-built surveys, profile and cross section surveys
- Know how to create field notes that are acceptable and conform to the Department of Transportation and National Society of Professional Surveyors
- Plan Reading & Preparation: Be able to recognize different types of plans (i.e. site plans, boundary plans, highway plans, profiles and cross sections, horizontal and vertical curves, pipeline plans, foundation plans, and developing existing and finished contours)
- First Aid & Safety: Basic knowledge of treatment practices for a variety of medical emergencies
- Have a general knowledge of traffic control and safety procedures for surveying and construction operations including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards
- Office Operations: Daily download and upload field/office data on the survey drive; Daily copy, scan, and file field notes and data in the appropriate survey filing system
- Miscellaneous Duties: Receive Supervisory guidance with respect to overall objectives; operate within department policy guidelines using independent judgment in achieving assigned objectives and performs additional assignments per supervisor’s direction; Document best practices to share with others by ensuring best construction methods are being used; Ensure project site and company assets are secure, and maintain a safe and respectful working environment at all times by implementing safety, EEO, risk management, training, and quality control programs; Adhere to company procedures and policies at all times; Participate as an active member of the Survey Team. Contribute to shared goals and collaborate with colleagues on achievement of priorities; Collaborate with internal teams, contractors and other stakeholders to align efforts; Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
Qualifications
- 2+ years of Layout experience
- High school diploma
- 2+ years of experience and knowledge of GPS surveys, total station surveys, cross-section surveys, construction surveys, and as-built surveys
- 2+ years of supervision and training of others in the use of proper field procedures

- Knowledge of types of surveys including principles and methods used in performing a variety of types of surveys: GPS surveys, total station surveys, cross-section surveys, construction surveys, and as-built surveys
- Knowledge of Field Equipment & Instruments: care, cleaning, and use of a variety of surveying tools and equipment, including field radios and data collectors
- Know how to operate, check, and perform basic field adjustments on rods, compass, transits, levels, tribrachs, theodolites, total stations, robotic total stations, tripods, and GPS equipment
- Some historical knowledge is required
- Knowledge of survey computation with the ability to do checks using a calculator, tape, and data collector to verify layout matches planned locations
- Be capable of performing vertical traverses (level loops)
- Knowledge of the principals of control points including by not limited to horizontal & vertical; acceptable tolerances for control networks as defined in the department standards; general placement of control points that can be used for survey control and possible machine grade control
- Maintain the Principles of the Profession including but not limited to extensive knowledge of ethics and the various technical company survey standards & show responsibility in the profession (i.e. attire, honesty, respect for personal property) and awareness of related professional associations
