About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Survey Crew Chief to lead field survey operations in the Salem, Virginia area. In this role, you will oversee daily survey activities, collect and verify critical field data, and ensure projects are completed safely, accurately, and efficiently. The ideal candidate is a motivated leader with strong technical expertise in land surveying, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise a land survey crew in daily field operations.
- Perform and oversee data collection for boundary, topographic, construction layout, and as-built surveys.
- Develop efficient field strategies for data acquisition, from primary control surveys through final project completion.
- Read, interpret, and apply construction drawings, plans, specifications, and survey tolerances.
- Coordinate daily with project managers, engineers, technicians, and other team members regarding schedules, priorities, and project progress.
- Represent the company professionally when interacting with clients, contractors, property owners, and public agencies.
- Identify potential field challenges and proactively implement solutions to maintain project timelines and quality standards.
- Collect, interpret, and document survey data, including detailed field notes, sketches, and records.
- Ensure all survey activities are accurately documented and organized.
- Complete daily reports, timesheets, and project documentation in a timely manner.
- Maintain and care for survey vehicles, instruments, and field equipment.
- Promote and comply with all company safety policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of land surveying experience; prior experience as a Survey Crew Chief is preferred.
- Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
- Proficient in operating: Robotic Total Stations, GNSS/GPS Receivers, Automatic and Digital Levels, Tablet PCs and related field technology.
- Experience with Trimble survey equipment and software preferred.
- Strong technical, computer, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated leadership ability, reliability, and a strong team-oriented mindset.
- Ability to work outdoors year-round in varying weather, terrain, and field conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds.
- Willingness to travel and stay overnight as required by project needs.
- Local Virginia candidates preferred, unless willing to relocate.
