Survey Crew Chief

Responsibilities

• Lead a survey crew to conduct field surveys, including boundary, topographic, construction, and as‑built surveys.
• Operate and maintain survey equipment such as total stations, GNSS receivers, laser scanners, levels, and data collectors.
• Prepare detailed field notes and sketches to document survey activities.
• Adhere to project requirements, goals, and schedules as outlined by the Survey Team Leader.
• Fundamentally operate survey software for downloading, processing, initial quality control, and verification of accuracy, ensuring data meets project and company quality requirements.
• Assist in monitoring project progress, troubleshooting issues, and implementing solutions to maintain timelines and budget constraints.
• Timely and effectively communicate issues or delays to the Survey Team Leader.
• Practice safety protocols, maintain PPE inventory, and perform safety checks on equipment, procedures, and vehicles.
• Provide basic guidance and training to junior survey crew members and assist in evaluating crew performance.

Requirements

• Certified Survey Technician certification, OSHA certifications, or successful completion of the NCEES Fundamentals of Surveying exam (desired).
• FAA Part 107 Certified Remote Pilot certification (preferred).
• Above‑average verbal and written communication skills; ability to present information to clients and employees.
• Comprehensive understanding of survey principles, methods, and practices.
• Ability to interpret and analyze survey data, maps, and construction plans.
• Strong organizational and leadership abilities.
• Proficiency with survey‑related mathematics (proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volume, slope, elevations, etc.).
• Knowledge of Subsurface Utility Engineering standards (ASCE 38‑22) and utility mapping techniques; ability to operate ground‑penetrating radar and electromagnetic locators (preferred).
• Associate or bachelor’s degree in surveying, geomatics, civil engineering, or related field, **or** five (5) years of related experience.
• Mentally and physically capable of performing all essential duties.
• Proficient in operating survey instruments and software, including total stations, GNSS receivers, levels, and data collectors.
• Experience locating boundary corners and/or PLS section corners, including accessory and witness monumentation.
• Willingness to travel overnight and work overtime as needed.
• Proficient computer skills, including data transfer, processing software, and Microsoft Office applications.
• Pass a pre‑employment driver’s‑license background check and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
• Pass periodic drug testing per company policy.
• Physical ability to stand for extended periods, frequently stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, bend, climb, balance, and lift/move 40 lb regularly (up to 100 lb occasionally).
• Vision capabilities: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• Ability to use hand tools (tape measure, machete, hammer, shovel, pick axe, etc.).

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily outdoors, often in remote and rugged locations, with exposure to heat, cold, rain, wind, and snow. Physical demands include standing for long periods, walking on uneven terrain, and carrying equipment.

Travel

Up to 80% travel throughout the Western United States, supporting projects in Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Wyoming, and Utah.

Schedule

10 days on / 4 days off rotation.

Pay

Base pay range: $27.79 – $41.63 USD per hour, varying with knowledge, skills, and experience.
