Survey Crew Chief

About the role

This position serves as a field survey technician performing crew chief duties on a field survey crew. The equipment used by WRA survey crews includes robotic total stations, GNSS receivers, electronic data collectors, differential levels, and various hand tools necessary to perform measurements at project sites. WRA also uses 3-D terrestrial scanners for certain surveys. Surveys may be for Land Development, Transportation, Government, Architecture, Environmental, and Infrastructure projects, and may include topographic, control, boundary, right of way, cross-section, construction stakeout, or terrestrial scanning depending on project needs. Field surveys may occur within Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia. Success in this position may present opportunity for advancement within the WRA Survey Department when vacancies or department growth occur.

Responsibilities

• Operate a robotic total station in robotic and manual modes
• Operate GNSS receivers in base and rover RTK, network RTK, and Static occupations
• Operate Carlson or Trimble field controllers for data collection and stakeout
• Locate topographic features to ensure complete mapping and contour development
• Maintain inventory of field supplies in work vehicle
• Keep detailed field notes and sketches
• Perform periodic maintenance and adjustment of survey equipment
• Operate 3D terrestrial scanner
• Perform necessary calculations

Requirements

• High School diploma or state equivalent certificate required
• Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
• Experience in many types of surveys: Control, GPS, Topographic, Boundary, Right of Way, Stakeout, and Differential Leveling
• Experience in the use and maintenance of surveying equipment, such as total stations, GNSS receivers, levels (optical or digital)
• Ability to work outdoors year-round in various weather conditions
• Ability to walk over various types of uneven terrain, including woods, roads, streams, and fields
• Ability to accommodate occasional overnight travel, typically on a weekly basis
• Must be physically able to carry equipment or supplies up to 40 lbs. over uneven terrain and open manholes with appropriate tools
• U.S. Citizenship required with ability to obtain security clearance
• Must possess a valid driver’s license

Preferred qualifications

• Associate or bachelor degree preferred
• 5+ years of relevant experience
• Experience with Carlson or Trimble software, feature code lists, and attributes
• Experience in surveys for state Departments of Transportation (MDOT, DelDOT, PennDOT)
• Experience with survey calculations, trigonometry, coordinate geometry
• CST certification
• LSIT certification or PLS license

Physical Requirements (Essential Functions)

• Walking and navigating across rough or uneven terrain such as mud, rocks, grass, dirt, steep hillsides, heavily wooded areas, and other unpaved surfaces
• Moving around active project sites, which may involve climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, or poles
• Performing physical activities such as bending, twisting, kneeling, and climbing
• Remaining in a stationary position—either standing or sitting—for extended periods
• Repetitive motions involving the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
• Lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds and/or carting objects up to 50 lbs. distances up to a 1/2 mile
• Driving to and from project sites, which may involve distances up to or exceeding 100 miles round trip
• Functioning safely in environments with potential risks, including exposure to high/low temperatures, precipitation, noise, confined spaces, or enclosed spaces

Pay

The expected compensation range for this position is $60,000.00 – $110,000 per year. The specific compensation offered may vary based on relevant knowledge, training, skills, work location, and/or experience.
