Survey Crew Chief

About the role

This full-time position leads a survey team in the field, collecting data to support design activities, boundary surveying, providing sketches, and layout for construction activities. The role requires extensive travel and the ability to self-fund expenses until reimbursement is disbursed.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical expertise to internal and external clients.
• Perform field work for land surveying scopes of work, including construction staking, boundary location, ALTA, and topography for various project types.
• Organize field staking materials as necessary.
• Operate GPS, total stations, scanners, and data collectors.
• Transfer files between data collectors and internal company project folders.
• Communicate project status, daily progress, and issues to office teams.
• Maintain productive working relationships with clients and coworkers.
• Adhere to the company’s Safety, Quality Management, and Equipment Maintenance policies.
• Ensure division, regional, and company policies and practices are consistently followed within the survey service.
• Lead by example—display solid judgment, good values, trust, honesty, openness, and professionalism.

Requirements

• Ability to effectively lead a survey crew and train/mentor survey crew members.
• Proficiency in operating a total station and GPS in both static and RTK modes for control networks, boundaries, ALTA’s, topography, and construction staking.
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving history.
• OSHA 10 and CPR/First Aid certification, or willingness to acquire it.
• Ability to perform tasks and solve problems with a high degree of independence.
• Basic “office suite” computer skills.

Physical Requirements

• Physically mobile in and around construction sites and field assignments.
• Ability to carry survey equipment and supplies in remote, rural, or urban surroundings.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds and walk long distances.
• Ability to work in outdoor conditions subject to weather, insects, and changing environments.

Qualifications

Required Experience

• Experience leading a survey crew and operating surveying equipment in the field.

Preferred Experience

• Associate’s Degree in Surveying, Engineering Technology, or a related area of study.
• Experience with land development (commercial and residential) and public infrastructure projects.
• Experience coordinating activities with office personnel, including surveying technicians and engineering staff.
• FAA Part 107 UAS License.
• Willingness and ability to travel and remain on a project site for extended periods.
