About the role
The Survey CAD Technician supports construction and land development projects by processing survey data, creating accurate stakeout and as-built drawings, and developing 3D models that ensure constructability for underground and site work. This role combines strong AutoCAD Civil 3D skills with a solid understanding of survey principles, utility and volume calculations, and civil design to deliver precise, professional deliverables for heavy civil and land development projects.
Responsibilities
- Post-process and analyze survey data to produce accurate, reliable design and construction deliverables.
- Prepare stakeout sketches, point files, and DXF files to support all construction stakeout needs.
- Produce accurate and professional as-built drawings that document completed construction conditions.
- Perform precise volume calculations and earthwork computations as needed for project requirements.
- Prepare accurate cut-sheets and sketches to support a variety of field tasks and layout activities.
- Create and manage working CAD files, including points, linework, and construction layout for heavy civil and site development projects.
- Perform utility-related calculations, including storm and sanitary calculations, to support constructability and design validation.
- Conduct PDF overlays and develop working files that integrate multiple plan sets and reference documents.
- Develop and refine 3D models to ensure constructability of designs for underground and related civil work.
- Organize and manage DWG files using templates, dynamic blocks, layers, and color standards to maintain clarity and consistency.
- Apply a clear understanding of survey points, point groups, CSV files, and coordinate systems to set up and maintain accurate project control.
- Calculate and verify pipe slopes and related design elements to ensure alignment with plans and specifications.
- Read and interpret civil, structural, and architectural plans and specifications to translate design intent into accurate CAD and survey outputs.
- Collaborate closely with licensed surveyors, project managers, CAD technicians, and field crews to ensure project requirements and deadlines are met.
- Communicate effectively with team members to resolve discrepancies, clarify design details, and improve workflows.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of drafting standards, file organization, and project documentation practices.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in AutoDesk AutoCAD Civil 3D, including working with points, stakeout, linework, and working files.
- Demonstrated experience producing as-built drawings for construction or land development projects.
- Experience with construction surveys, construction layout, and related CAD workflows.
- Knowledge of land development, site development, and civil design principles.
- Understanding of topographic and as-built surveys and their application to design and construction.
- Clear understanding of survey points, point groups, CSV files, and coordinate systems.
- Ability to calculate pipe slopes and apply these calculations within Civil 3D and survey workflows.
- Ability to organize and manage DWG files using templates, dynamic blocks, layers, and color standards.
- Basic CAD knowledge with a strong emphasis on survey-related applications.
- Proficiency with PC software and systems such as Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, Dropbox, and Microsoft Teams.
- Ability to read and understand civil, structural, and architectural plans and specifications.
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills to support volume calculations, utility computations, and earthwork analyses.
