About the role

The role involves assisting surgeons, anesthetists, and nurses in the care of patients in the Operating Room under the direction of a Physician or Registered Nurse.

Responsibilities

• Maintain knowledge and practice of aseptic technique.
• Assists the circulating nurse in the preparation of surgical procedures and during room turnovers between procedures.
• Prepares sterile field for surgical procedures, ensuring proper instruments and supplies are available for use.
• During the surgical procedure:
  • Anticipate needs for surgeon and pass instruments and supplies;
  • Function as assistant, when needed;
  • Obtain counts with circulating nurse;
  • Care for specimens according to procedure;
  • Maintain proper care of instruments and supplies when procedure is finished.
• Maintain equipment, supplies, and environmental safety.
• Maintain knowledge of current trends in surgical procedures and instrumentation.
• Participate in in-services, committees, etc.
• Decontaminate and prepare for sterilization of instruments utilized during surgical cases.
• Maintain a clean and safe work environment.

Requirements

• Current BLS certification.
• Completion of an accredited Surgical Scrub tech program or at least 2 years’ experience working as a scrub tech.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Formal aseptic technique training.
• Computer skills including word processing, databases, and e-mail.
• Excellent verbal and communication skills.

Qualifications

Full-time position at Sparrow Ionia Hospital.

Skills

Knowledge of current trends in surgical procedures and instrumentation.
