Surgical Technologist Trainee

About the role

A Surgical Tech Trainee will learn the role of a Surgical Technologist on the job with provided education and clinical experience. Provides technical and clinical support to the perioperative team during a variety of surgical procedures. Performs duties as the primary scrub person by handling instrumentation, supplies and equipment. Anticipates the surgeon and procedural needs. Must be able to complete the didactic program provided within 8 months.

Responsibilities

  • Standards of Care: Maintains operative care standards according to AORN guidelines.
  • Preparation and Setup: Stocks rooms, cleans equipment, and prepares supplies based on surgeon and anesthesia needs.
  • Surgical Support: Assists with patient positioning, surgical hand scrubs, counts, and Time Out procedures.
  • Safety and Infection Control: Identifies and addresses safety hazards, follows universal precautions, and infection control protocols.
  • Accountability and Flexibility: Organizes tasks to meet patient and unit needs, adapts to changes, and stays current with education and policies.

Required Qualifications

  • BLS Certification up to date
  • Minimum 1 year experience in a direct patient care environment required
  • Must be able to complete the didactic education program provided within 8 months
  • On the job training schedule and any additional education needed to fulfill the requirements of this Surgical Technologist Trainee program will be discussed during the interview process

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent hand and finger use (e.g., to operate a computer keyboard, work with fine/small instruments).
  • Lifting and carrying items up to 40 lbs. (e.g., boxes, equipment, IV solutions), with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, or crouch for tasks such as retrieving items from lower shelves or filing in low drawers.
  • Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods, as the position may require.
  • Capacity to operate job-related equipment, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Location and Schedule

Onsite at Cayuga Medical Center: 101 Dates Drive, Ithaca, NY 14850

Shift: Days FLEX. Anticipated schedule Monday through Friday. Option between 5x8s, 4x10s, and 3x12s (based on department needs). Ability to work a rotating on-call schedule with a 30 min response time required. On-site call house available.

Pay

$27.90 Per Hour plus benefits

Shift differentials for evenings, nights and weekends based on schedule shifts
