Surgical Technologist (Per Diem)

Purpose of Position

Aids in various surgical procedures under the supervision of the surgeon, anesthesiologist/CRNA, and registered nurse. Assists in maintaining a sterile environment and preparing the operating room.

Responsibilities

• Be courteous to patients, visitors, physicians, volunteers, and other employees.
• Set up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions.
• Maintain a sterile environment according to hospital policy and AORN Standards of Care.
• Pass instruments and sterile supplies to the surgeon and assistant.
• Hold retractors, cut sutures, help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.
• Prepare, care for, and dispose of specimens for laboratory analysis.
• Apply surgical dressings.
• Ensure availability of surgeon and case-specific instrumentation and equipment.
• Transport patients to the operating room and help position them.
• Understand and use appropriate sterilization methods for special equipment and instruments.
• Operate sterilizers, light, suction, and help with diagnostic equipment.
• Accurately and safely prepare and label medications during surgery.
• Assist in transferring patients to the recovery area.
• Participate in turnover and restocking the operating room for the next procedure.
• Respect patients' privacy, dignity, and safety.
• Provide a safe environment for surgical patients.
• Assume responsibility for orienting new operating room employees.
• Work collaboratively with the registered nurse to update and maintain equipment and instrumentation.
• Attend unit staff meetings, in-service programs, and educational programs.

Qualifications

• Graduate of a Surgical Technology course.
• Certification preferred.

Skills

• Good technical knowledge of the surgical environment.
• Knowledge of infection control and sterility.
• Understanding of specific equipment and supplies used in surgical procedures.
• Ability to operate sterilizers.
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.

Schedule

Per diem, rotating days, shifts include: 7:15a-3:15p, 10a-6p, occasional weekends and holidays. On-call outline: Monday – Friday: 6p-7a, and Saturday, Sunday & holidays: 7a-7a.

Falmouth Hospital Association, FHA-Operating Room, hourly pay range: $27.74 - $43.35 annually.
