Surgical Technologist II - Women's Center

Under general supervision, the Certified Surgical Technologist prepares sterile supplies and equipment for surgical procedures, performs direct patient-care duties in the operating room, and functions as an autonomous member of the operating-room team. Demonstrates knowledge and skills required to provide developmentally appropriate care and service to patients and their families.

Responsibilities

• Follow established procedural guides in the preparation of sterile supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures.
• Perform appropriate room duties involved with direct patient care.
• Function autonomously as a member of the operating room team.
• Demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills at a Level II practitioner level.

Requirements

• High school diploma.
• Graduation from an accredited school of surgical technology or surgical technology military program.
• Minimum of one year of work experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist (Level II practitioner).
• Credentialed as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (formerly LCC-ST); certification must be maintained.
• If not certified, evidence of continuous employment in South Carolina as a Surgical Technologist before January 1, 2008 is required. New graduates must obtain certification within 90 days of graduation.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA-recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider; must be obtained within 2 weeks of hire and maintained thereafter.

• Ability to lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs. (infrequent).
• Ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force (frequent). Examples:
  • Transferring a 100 lb. patient who cannot assist requires 50 lbs. of force; for every additional 100 lbs., assistance is required.
  • 20 lbs. of force is needed to push a 400 lb. patient in a wheelchair on carpet.
  • 25 lbs. of force is required to push a stretcher with a patient using one hand.
• Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected, in one eye or with both eyes (continuous).
• Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance (continuous).
• Ability to match or discriminate between colors (continuous).
• Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception (continuous).
• Good peripheral vision capabilities (continuous).
• Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction (continuous).
• Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements (continuous).
• Ability to deal effectively with stressful situations (continuous).
