Surgical Technologist CVOR

About the role

This position functions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and directly reports to Surgical Services management. Use of this job code must be reviewed and approved by the Surgical Services Director’s Council.

What We're Looking For

We’re seeking an experienced CVOR Surgical Technologist who is passionate about delivering exceptional patient care in a fast-paced cardiovascular operating room. The ideal candidate is highly skilled in supporting complex surgical procedures, maintains the highest standards of sterile technique, and works collaboratively with surgeons, nurses, and the entire surgical team. Only candidates with recent CVOR Surgical Technologist experience, including experience assisting with cardiovascular procedures, will be considered.

Essential Functions

• Support system-wide surgical operations and safety plans.
• Ensure sterilization criteria are met and maintain a sterile, safe environment.
• Prepare the operating room and instruments, assist with sterile processing, and support surgeons within the ORT scope of practice.
• Identify and respond to emergency situations, assist with room turnover and cleaning.
• Participate in training and mentoring, providing at least one educational offering per year.
• Perform as either a specialty leader or clinical expert:
  • Specialty Leader: Oversee specialty areas, coordinate case flow, assignments, and staff training.
  • Clinical Expert: Scrub high-acuity cases, train and mentor caregivers, and assist with new hire orientation.

Minimum Qualifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers certification
• Completion of an accredited Operating Room Technician (ORT) program, or:
• Graduated from a non-accredited surgical tech program within the past six months (not eligible for Tech in Surgery exam), or
• Two years of scrub tech experience in hospital/military surgical services within the last three years, or
• Hired for on-the-job training in a rural hospital, or
• International training equivalent and legally authorized to work in the U.S.
• Competent in Level III or IV Cases in high acuity specialty areas such as Robotics, Neuro, CV, Trauma, Transplant, Reimplants, Plastics Craniofacial, Major abdominal General Surgery cases, Major ortho trauma and/or facility case mix in Level II Trauma Facility or Quaternary Center
• Able to take assigned specialty call in Level II Trauma Facility or Quaternary Center
• Must be in good standing
• Prior approval from the Surgical Services Director Council must be obtained before caregivers are moved into this role

Preferred Qualifications

• Surgical Technologist with 2+ years of experience
• Surgical Technologist with proficiency scrubbing into high acuity cases such as Neuro, Cardiovascular, Transplants, and Trauma
• Active National Certification as an OR Tech in Surgery or Certified Surgical Technologist
• Certification is expected within the timeframe outlined below:
  • Surgical Technologists who graduated from an accredited program must certify within one year of hire (may use either NBSTSA or NCCT certification).
  • Surgical Technologists who have graduated from non-accredited programs or completed on-the-job or military training need to certify as soon as possible. This can be done upon graduation or, according to the NCCT requirements, take beyond one year in order to meet worked hours (>6000) and case tracking requirements.

Physical Requirements

• Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
• Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
• Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
• Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
• Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)
• May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.

Pay

Level IV Pay Range: $35.60 – $54.93

Schedule

Full Time – 40 hours per week; variable hours, schedule will be discussed in interview. This position could be filled as a Surgical Tech III or Surgical Tech IV depending on experience and qualifications.
