About the Role

Performs in the role of first assistant to the surgeon, able to perform all the duties associated with the Scrub Tech III role. Demonstrates knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and carries out functions that assist the surgeon in performing a safe operation with optimal patient results at Florida Medical Clinic Orlando Health Wiregrass Ranch Hospital, a state-of-the-art facility in Wesley Chapel, Florida.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of sterile techniques and specialized instrumentation/equipment for various specialty procedures.
  • Anticipates and prioritizes the needs of each step in surgical procedures.
  • Participates in sponge, needle, and instrument counts as required.
  • Maintains surgical specimens for pathology evaluation.
  • Assists in ordering and stocking specialty supplies under management direction.
  • Performs under direct supervision of the operating surgeon, understanding the role of the first assistant within the surgical team.
  • Communicates patient condition information to the RN and surgical team members.
  • Maintains working knowledge of all surgical procedures and provides assistance to the surgeon, including:
    • Positioning and draping the patient.
    • Clamping, tying, and cauterizing superficial bleeders.
    • Providing exposure using retractors.
    • Maintaining a dry field with suction equipment.
    • Following and cutting sutures.
    • Suturing subcutaneous skin and wound closure as directed.
  • Displays knowledge and skill in tissue handling, exposure, instrument use, suturing, homeostasis, asepsis, and infection control.
  • Recognizes safety hazards and initiates appropriate preventative/corrective action.
  • Demonstrates advanced proficiency in surgical technology practice and performs in the scrub role across all surgical specialties.
  • Maintains professional attitude and compliance with Orlando Health policies/procedures.
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise and advanced knowledge of patient care techniques related to surgical specialties.
  • Assumes responsibility for professional growth, development, and continuing education.
  • Participates in orientation of new staff, serving as a role model and technical resource.
  • Performs all duties of the Surgical Tech III role and any additional functions as needed by the department.

Requirements

  • High School diploma.
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
  • Successful completion of an accredited First Assistant training course (didactic and supervised clinical components).

Qualifications

  • National certification as a Surgical Technologist from one of the following:
    • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) – renewed every 4 years.
    • Tech in Surgery - Certified (TS-C) by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) – renewed annually.
  • Current BLS/HealthCare Provider certification.
  • Three (3) years of recent diversified surgical technology experience.
