About the Role

Step into the operating room with purpose — join us as a Surgical Technician and play a vital role in patient care, precision, and teamwork every day! Our surgical techs at Presbyterian Hospital assist with Peds, ENT, General, Neuro, ortho, and vascular surgeries. There are 16 OR rooms and on average see about 40-65 cases a day.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position with a 0.90 FTE. Weekend schedule: Friday–Sunday, 06:30–19:00.

Responsibilities

• Provide assistance and support to surgeons during procedures by preparing and handling instruments and equipment.
• Maintain a sterile field and uphold strict infection control standards.
• Anticipate the needs of the surgical team to facilitate seamless operations.
• Ensure the operating room is safe, organized, and equipped for each procedure.
• Collaborate with nurses, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals to maximize patient safety and efficiency.
• Demonstrate superior knowledge of advanced surgical equipment and advanced surgical instrumentation.
• Demonstrate leadership abilities, including organizing and coordinating personnel and materials.
• Develop, organize, and deliver continuing education topics.
• Apply knowledge related to emergency situations and demonstrate critical thinking in anticipating patient and surgeon needs.
• Perform instrument counts prior to each procedure and maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments during procedures.
• Secure and prepare all supplies and instruments required for surgical intervention before procedures.
• Ensure the preparation and maintenance of the sterile field in the OR.
• Prepare patient skin for surgical treatment and position/re-position patients during surgery.
• Help monitor patients during surgery and provide supportive care during the pre-operative phase.
• Perform scrub functions and ensure specimens are correctly handled and routed.
• Maintain current knowledge of anatomy/physiology and medications used intraoperatively.
• Stay current with developments in the field through seminars, workshops, and publications.
• Follow all federal, state, and departmental safety procedures.

Skills

• Demonstrate superior knowledge and expert practice in advanced surgical procedures: Neurosurgery, high-risk Pediatric ENT, transplants, robotics, bariatrics, joint replacement, and vascular.
• Expanded knowledge of specialty instrumentation, microscopes, navigation systems, and neuromonitoring awareness.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED plus short-term training in an operating room setting or graduation from a surgical technician certification program at an accredited school.
• Current BLS certification required.
• Familiarity with all surgical instruments and equipment, and a working knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique.
• Minimum of 2+ years of experience in a hospital or outpatient operating room if not from an accredited training program.
