Surgical Services RN

Base pay: $38.22 - $58.37 per hour

About the role

The Registered Nurse specializing in PeriOperative nursing practice performs nursing activities in the preoperative, intra-operative, and postoperative phase of the patient's surgical experience. This position requires the RN to work effectively in Same Day Surgery, Post Anesthesia Care, the procedure room, and in the Operating Room in the circulating nurse role. The position also includes on-call hours for surgical emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Continuously assess the patient's physiological and psychological status before, during, and after surgery and recognize abnormalities.
• Document in thorough, timely, and accurate fashion that reflects the care provided.
• Anticipate, interpret, and act on patient data to prevent problems or complications.
• Identify priorities and implement care based on sound nursing judgment, individual patient needs, and facility procedures and standards.
• Perform effectively in crises or complex situations, promptly grasping the situation and performing your role.
• Function as a patient advocate by protecting the patient from harm during the perioperative period.
• Recommend changes needed in policy and procedure to assure quality care.
• Assist in admission, transfer, and discharge of patients in assigned areas, completing necessary forms and referrals.
• Assure that educational needs are met for all patients.
• Anticipate and coordinate admission, transfer, and discharge needs of patients to assure timely and smooth transitions.
• Demonstrate knowledge of aseptic techniques, familiarity with surgical instrumentation and equipment, and principles of microbiology to maintain a safe and therapeutic environment.
• Perform nursing skills according to REHC policies and procedures using proper body mechanics and universal precautions.
• Keep current in nursing knowledge and attend educational offerings that enhance skills.
• Prepare, process, and provide functioning supplies, equipment, and instruments to ensure their economic and efficient function for patients and personnel.
• Anticipate and provide supplies consistently in a timely fashion.
• Maintain assigned departments and areas supplied and neatly organized using systematic inventory and material control principles; work with the Purchasing Department.
• Assist with the research and evaluation of new equipment and supplies.
• Contribute to the quality and safety efforts of the facility by providing honest and valuable input.

• Work cooperatively with other departments and personnel to provide patient care continuity.
• Seek opportunities to help other staff, contributing to teamwork and spirit.
• Assist with patient scheduling.
• Promote a working atmosphere conducive to learning.

Requirements

• Hold a current Minnesota RN license.
• Certified in American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
• Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification required within 6 months of hire.
• Must possess one of the following certifications at the time of hire:
  • American Heart Association (AHA) BLS
  • Red Cross CPR
  • A comparable certification with prior approval
• Employees will be enrolled in the RQI program and must complete quarterly training modules to obtain AHA BLS certification within the first 3 months of employment if not already certified through AHA.

Schedule

Full-time (0.9 FTE, 72 hours per two weeks). Schedule is primarily Monday through Friday, with scheduled on-call hours.
