Department: AHCI Cancer Center Minneapolis – 8-hour day/evening shift, 40 hours per week, occasional weekend rotation.

About the Role

Join the Allina Health Cancer Institute as a Surgical Oncology Physician Assistant. This full-time role is based at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, with occasional coverage at other metro Allina Health Cancer Institute locations. Schedule includes Monday–Friday shifts and weekend rounding approximately once every 7 weeks.

Allina Health Cancer Institute offers a hybrid model blending academic-level medicine with the accessibility of a community-based practice. With over 100 highly trained oncology specialists and eighteen comprehensive cancer care locations across Minnesota and western Wisconsin, the institute is accredited by ACS, CoC, NAPBC, and APEx for quality, excellence, and safety. The program also features industry-leading integrative oncology and high-risk cancer surveillance initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a key member of the surgical team, focusing on Operating Room (OR) support for procedures in:
  • Breast Surgery
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB)
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Urology
  • Gynecology
• Provide inpatient rounding across multidisciplinary surgical specialties.
• Cover clinic duties as needed.
• Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, determine diagnoses, and develop treatment plans.
• Order and interpret medical diagnostics in collaboration with the attending physician.
• Prescribe medications, treatments, therapy, and medical equipment.
• Provide patient education for chronic illness management and wellness care.
• Refer patients to specialty care when necessary.
• Consult with physicians for cases outside the Physician Assistant scope of practice or when diagnosis/treatment plans are unclear.
• Promote communication within the healthcare team and act as a resource for team members.
• Collaborate with hospital staff through patient consultations and rounding.
• Participate in program development with the primary care team.
• Act as a liaison with outside agencies as needed.

Requirements

• Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
• Minimum of 2 years of experience as a Physician Assistant in a surgical oncology or surgical role.
• Licensed Physician Assistant – MN Board of Medical Practice (required upon hire).
• ACLS-BLS Tier 2 certification (required within 180 days).
• Certification as a Physician Assistant – NCCPA (National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants) (required upon hire).
• Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certification (required upon hire).

Physical Demands: Medium Work – Lifting up to 32 lbs. occasionally (per Allina Safe Patient Moving Policy) and up to 25 lbs. frequently.

Pay

Pay Range: $135,096 to $164,216 per year. The starting base pay reflects a full-time FTE and depends on factors such as experience, education, and union agreements (if applicable).
