Surgical Assistant I

Surgical Responsibilities

• Absorb and assist surgeon during consultations and treatments.
• Perform basic lab duties such as taking impressions, pouring up/trimming models.
• Clean instruments according to infection control and biohazard protocols.
• Operate autoclave and manage surgical tray setup.
• Set up and break down the operating room for IV anesthesia and surgery.
• Seat patients and prepare them for pre-operative procedures.
• Review patient charts and set up nitrous oxide for sedated patients.
• Position restraints and support airways for sedated patients.
• Retrieve and circulate necessary instruments.
• Provide excellent patient care and communication.

Non-Surgical Responsibilities

• Restock supplies, forms, handouts, and rooms.
• Take vital signs and familiarize oneself with all forms and handouts.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA requirements.
• Perform administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, filing, and charting.
• Make follow-up phone calls to patients.
• Take X-rays as needed.
• Close and open the office each day (including tanks, suction, X-ray).
• Greet patients and ensure they feel comfortable.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Current CPR/BLS certification.
• Dental X-ray license (Pano, PA, CBCT).
• Excellent organizational and time management skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• The ability to provide excellent patient care, even under stressful circumstances.
• Consistent professionalism in appearance and attitude.

Preferred Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited Surgical Assistant program.
• Certification as a Surgical Assistant.

Special Requirements

• Must be able to stand up to 80% of the time.
• Physical requirements include sitting, stooping, turning, standing, bending, walking, hearing, reading, writing, and keyboarding, may lift up to 25 lbs.
