Provides patient care for ill and injured animals in the Surgery unit of the Veterinary Medical Center. This role works primarily in the operating rooms of the Small Animal Clinic, with occasional assignments in Large Animal Surgery, Anesthesia Support Center, Radiology, and Emergency and Critical Care.
Responsibilities
- Instruct and demonstrate techniques to veterinary students
- Assist students and clinicians in surgical and clinical procedures
- Maintain supplies, equipment, and cleanliness of hospital areas
- Provide extensive patient care, including surgery, anesthesia, drug dosing, and sterilization
Requirements
- Associate’s degree or equivalent in Veterinary Technology from a two- or three-year college, technical, or vocational program
- Six months to one year of related work experience in patient care, surgery, anesthesia, drug dosing, and sterilization
- Proficiency in spreadsheet and word processing software
- Experience in a veterinary hospital, research setting, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Licensed as a Veterinary Technician with the State of Michigan or ability to obtain certification within one year of employment
Physical Demands
- Lift medical equipment and animals into cages
- Carry animals between cages, exam tables, and gurneys
- Push carts containing animals and equipment throughout the hospital
- Climb stairs while carrying lab samples
- Restrain animals during procedures
Health Risks
- Exposure to animals or unfixed tissue
- Possible requirement to wear a respirator
- Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases
