About the Role
Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville, Tennessee, part of Covenant Health, is seeking a Certified Surgical Technologist for a full-time, day shift position. The role involves facilitating patient care by assisting physicians and nursing staff before, during, and after surgical procedures. This includes creating and maintaining a sterile field and providing the instruments and supplies required by surgeons in a sterile manner according to the established plan of patient care.
Responsibilities
- Under supervision of RN/MD, facilitate patient care by assisting the surgeon before, during, and after surgical procedures.
- Create and maintain a sterile field and provide instruments and supplies required by surgeons in a sterile manner according to the established plan for patient care.
- Follow unit standards and processes to deliver age-appropriate care for all patients.
- Demonstrate accountability as an individual and team member in meeting patient/family needs.
- Participate in identifying cost-effective measures for clinical care.
- Plan, set up, perform, and clean up assigned surgical procedures as a circulator and/or scrub tech.
- Demonstrate knowledge of equipment and instrumentation pertaining to cases.
- Safely operate special equipment used in surgical cases (e.g., lasers, microscopes, tourniquets, endoscopes, drills, saws, etc.).
- Maintain instrument and equipment integrity.
- Perform room turn-over and terminal cleaning.
- Utilize supplies appropriately and in a cost-effective manner.
- Demonstrate knowledge of and apply the principles of asepsis in creating and maintaining the sterile field.
- Use proper technique when scrubbing, gowning, gloving, and setting up sterile fields.
- Recognize sterile vs. unsterile items; recognize contamination and take proper corrective action.
- Continually monitor the sterile field and surgical team to assure sterility is maintained.
- Assist nurse in performing sharp, sponge, and instrument counts according to policy as needed.
- Demonstrate proper counting technique for all countables and apply proper procedures with incorrect counts.
- Demonstrate understanding of exceptions to counts.
- Demonstrate proper positioning techniques, including use of proper positioning aids to protect nerves, bony prominences, and maintain circulation.
- Follow policies, procedures, and safety standards.
- Complete required education assignments annually.
- Work toward achieving goals and objectives and participate in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must hold current and active national Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or TS-C certification established by either the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
- Minimum Experience: None with certification.
