Supervisory Wildlife Biologist (Assistant District Supervisor)

About the role

You will serve as an Assistant District Supervisor within Wildlife Services (WS). Primary duties involve assisting in the planning, recommending, organizing, and administering of operational and technical assistance programs designed to efficiently, effectively, and safely reduce wildlife damage that adversely impacts agricultural interests, human health and safety, property, and natural resources.

Responsibilities

• Leading a team, including developing and providing training in wildlife damage mitigation.
• Selecting the appropriate method, such as pesticides, firearms, explosives, repellents, traps, to develop and deliver safe and effective damage management strategies.
• Interpreting and applying policies, regulations, laws, and ordinances that affect wildlife damage management operations and working within those guidelines.
• Identifying and analyzing techniques for WDM operations in the work unit. Recommending, through supervisor, areas for potential research or developmental study.
• Assists in the supervision of the work unit’s Federal employees and, in some cases, cooperative employees (collaborators), possibly including technicians, seasonal or intermittent personnel, and interns.
• Affairs with the supervisor in development of performance standards and evaluation and monitoring of work performance of subordinates.

Qualifications

• BASIC REQUIREMENT: Degree in biological science that includes: At least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science.
• OR Combination of education and experience: Equivalent to a major in biological science (at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
• FOR THE GS-9 LEVEL: At least one year of specialized experience that may have been obtained in the private or public sectors which demonstrates: Leading a team, selecting appropriate methods for wildlife damage management, interpreting and applying relevant policies and laws, and supporting environmental compliance efforts.
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.
