Supervisory Supply Technician

This position serves as the Supervisory Supply Technician (Medical) for the Medical Supply Distribution (MSD) areas of Logistics Service within the VA Health Care System. The role ensures supplies and material are distributed to all areas serviced by Logistics by directing, supervising, and managing the primary inventory point that receives, stores, and issues supplies and materials for both clinical and administrative service areas of the medical center.

Responsibilities

  • Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, sets and adjusts short-term priorities, and prepares schedules for completion of work based on priorities.
  • Advises, counsels, and instructs employees on work and administrative matters, such as complaints and grievances.
  • Identifies and implements ways to eliminate or reduce significant bottlenecks and barriers to production.
  • Provides guidance and evaluates work involving new, complex, or unusual situations without clear precedence.
  • Oversees management and distribution of all supplies and material in the medical center through subordinates who maintain stock, monitor expiration dates, rotate stock, ensure critical supplies are tracked, perform daily inventory, resolve record discrepancies, distribute items, deliver supplies timely, and complete specialty cart preparation.
  • Oversees the receipt of supplies and material into the medical center.
  • Ensures supplies are unpacked and properly stored in inventory areas.
  • Analyzes and resolves difficult issues and problems to plan effectively and render equitable, reliable decisions.
  • Conducts market research on new products and ensures they are recorded in the automated inventory system.
  • Ensures availability of recurring supply items managed and distributed through the computerized inventory management system.
  • Analyzes management reports to manage and control fund control point limitations, identify trends, correct errors, and resolve problems.
  • Works with members of the vendor and/or contract community, managers, supervisors, and other staff throughout the medical center on Logistics issues.
  • Communicates with subordinate staff and other administrative and clinical staff to coordinate and persuade logistics activities on the implementation of policy or procedural changes.

Requirements

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/03/2026.

Time-In-Grade Requirement

Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position, you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate one-year time-in-grade, as required. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

Specialized Experience

You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning and coordinating work to be accomplished by other staff.
  • Establishing priorities for a department.
  • Overseeing the receipt and distribution of supplies and materials for a complex medical center.
  • Maintaining stock at inventory locations and monitoring expiration dates.
  • Ensuring supplies are delivered timely.
  • Training new employees and answering questions on local processes and procedures.
  • Ensuring proper storage of supplies and materials.
  • Resolving problems and providing guidance to others on logistics activities.
  • Making recommendations on improvement of work production and quality of work.

Experience

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements

  • The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday.
  • Frequent reaching, bending, and lifting of supply packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds).
  • Pushing loaded carts of medical supplies (weighing in excess of 100+ pounds).
  • With proper assistance, moves heavier items weighing over 40 pounds.

Schedule

Full-Time - Sunday - Saturday - Rotating Schedule - Holidays (Available for assignment to day, swing, or night shift to include holidays and weekends).
