Supervisory Paralegal Specialist

About the role

This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations, Seattle Field Office, Port of Pembina, Pembina, North Dakota.

Responsibilities

• Reviewing and processing all cases within their area of authority through to final adjudication and solution;
• Assuring that the elements necessary in order to establish a violation are present and are supported by substantiated documentation;
• Developing and evaluating all evidence, facts, and circumstances relating to a particular case and making determinations, decisions, and recommendations within the requirements of the laws and regulations;
• Receiving, examining, and evaluating petitions filed by individuals, attorneys, and/or corporations or other legal entities seeking relief from seizures, penalties, fines, and/or liquidated damages;
• Working with the contractor, violators, attorneys, U.S. Attorney's office and others on the management, manipulation, remittance, inventory and destruction of seized and forfeited property;
• Establishing work schedules, priorities, deadlines, and standards for acceptable work, coordinating and integrating with others that interface with the work process.

Requirements

• You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this position;
• Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with Selective Service;
• Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years;
• All pre-employment processes will be conducted in English;
• You may be required to pass a background investigation;
• CBP follows the DHS Drug-Free Workplace Plan for drug testing procedures;
• Your conduct will be subject to the ethics rules applicable to all Executive Branch employees, and to CBP employees specifically, as well as the criminal conflict of interest statutes.

Qualifications

• You qualify for the GS-13 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
• Reviewing and evaluating case files and supporting documentation to ensure completeness, accuracy, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations;
• Analyzing evidence, facts, and circumstances in assigned cases, applying relevant statutes, regulations, and guidelines, and preparing written recommendations or determinations for case resolution;
• Communicating with attorneys, officials, and stakeholders to clarify procedures, provide information, and address questions related to case processing;
• Managing case records and documentation, prioritizing workload, and ensuring timely completion of actions in accordance with established policies and procedures;
• Providing technical guidance, training, and feedback to colleagues and junior staff, sharing expertise to improve understanding of legal processes and support professional development.
