Supervisory Fish Biologist.

About the role

This supervisory position leads fishery and aquatic conservation programs within the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, coordinating with other agencies, tribes, and cooperators to restore, protect, enhance, and manage fishery resources and aquatic species of conservation interest.

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership, coordination, and direction within the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and with other fishery agencies, tribes, and cooperators.
• Identify, develop, plan, and implement hatchery production evaluations, investigative projects, field studies on fishery and aquatic conservation issues, and sub-basin and basin management plans.
• Develop and negotiate interagency agreements.
• Develop and/or prioritize budgets, budget justifications, and impact statements.
• Identify, prioritize, and implement habitat restoration projects.
• Supervise and mentor staff, identifying and developing the scientific skills and abilities of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service staff.
• Develop policy, guidance, or direction for the restoration, protection, enhancement, management, and harvest of fishery resources and aquatic species of conservation interest.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
• Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
• Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
• Direct Deposit participation required.
• Successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license throughout employment.
• May be required to serve a 1-year probationary period to evaluate fitness and whether continued employment advances the public interest.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of the announcement unless otherwise stated.

Basic Educational Requirement

Degree with a major in biological science that included at least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects (e.g., limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology) and at least 12 semester hours in animal sciences (e.g., general zoology, ecology, genetics). Excess aquatic coursework may be used to meet the aquatic requirement. Transcripts must be submitted.

Specialized Experience (GS-13)

One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level, including:

• Assisting in the development, implementation, and coordination of field and hatchery data collection for evaluation of hatchery operations, fishery, and/or habitat and aquatic conservation efforts.
• Preparing budgetary recommendations for equipment, materials, and personnel required for hatchery and fisheries resource projects.
• Preparing and delivering oral presentations on research results at staff meetings, stakeholder meetings, technical workshops, and professional conferences.
• Preparing responses to hatchery, fishery, and habitat conservation inquiries from federal, state, tribal, and other interested parties in accordance with agency policy.
• Applying professional knowledge of fish biology principles, theories, and practices to investigate the biology, ecology, and habitat requirements of salmonids and large river fish.
