Supervises the day-to-day operations of the Sterile Processing Department across all shifts, ensuring the decontamination, set assembly/preparation, and sterilization of all medical equipment, surgical instrumentation, and operating room case carts.
Responsibilities
- Oversee safe and efficient practices for decontamination, instrument assembly, and sterilization of all reprocessed instruments and equipment.
- Maintain a safe work environment with 24-hour accountability for personnel and department activities.
- Provide direct supervision to ensure timely delivery of clean and/or sterile instrumentation and medical equipment.
- Maintain adequate department staffing levels to support daily operations for the Operating Room.
- Monitor, maintain, and record all department quality assurance activities in compliance with The Joint Commission, OSHA, Title 22, and facility policies.
- Partner with the Sterile Processing Site Manager to evaluate and implement policy and procedural changes.
- Conduct departmental orientation, training, skills reviews, and educational programs to uphold high staff performance standards.
- Monitor inventory levels to ensure adequate supplies while preventing waste and controlling costs.
- Assist with payroll, non-payroll, and capital budgets as needed.
- Develop and report quality assurance metrics to appropriate committees.
- Facilitate ongoing communication with staff and ancillary departments, encouraging staff involvement in problem-solving.
- Attend local and regional management meetings and participate in medical center and nursing committees.
- Assist with recruitment, selection, and performance evaluations of new and existing staff.
- Support and pursue quality improvement initiatives for the department and organization.
- Analyze department needs, study new products, equipment, and techniques, and accept suggestions for improved performance.
- Ensure department functions meet CDC, OSHA, EPA, AAMI, State, APIC, and Joint Commission guidelines and standards.
- Assist in establishing policies and procedures for decontaminating, setting up, and sterilizing instruments and equipment.
- Maintain a safe, functional, and effective environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
Requirements
- Minimum one (1) year of experience in Sterile Processing and/or Operating Room.
- Bachelor’s degree or four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.
- High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
- Knowledge of sterile processing and regulatory requirements.
- PC and data processing skills.
- Outstanding communication skills.
- Ability to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Supervisory experience.
- Sterile Processing Technician and/or Sterile Processing Manager certification from IAHCSMM or CBSPD.
- Membership with a National Sterile Processing Organization (e.g., ASHCSP or IAHCSMM).
- Bachelor’s degree in sterile processing or operating room.
Schedule
- Full-time (40 hours per week).
- Evening shift: 03:00 PM – 11:30 PM.
- Workdays: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
- On-call weekends.
- Worker location: Onsite.
Pay
$74,800 – $96,800 per year. Actual base pay determined at offer based on labor market data, internal alignment, and candidate qualifications.
