Supervisor, Safety (HSE)

About the role

The Safety Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day health, safety and environmental support to site leadership and operating teams within the designated facility. This includes coaching, teaching, and training site personnel on safe operating behaviors and the design, development, and implementation of safety and risk control programs. The position ensures DSV’s Safety Programs Policies and Procedures are adhered to and that the facility complies with all statutory requirements (including but not limited to OHSAS 18001:2007 & ISO 14001:2004). This role functions as a subject matter expert and consultant to help internal clients build sustainable loss improvement processes within the facility.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for the overall safety and security of assigned facility, operations, and staff for the site.
• Maintain positive IFR statistics and other safety metrics for assigned location/operations.
• Ensure compliance with DSV Safety Programs Policies and Procedures and related site and client-specific Standard Operating Procedures, including qualification of adequate resources and implementation of necessary systems (daily management systems, annual assessments, and reporting).
• Establish HSE goals consistent with corporate policies and aligned with corporate and site vision.
• Ensure adequately trained HSE resources are in place and actively support needed HSE activity to hold the facility accountable.
• Implement effective systems to comply with all applicable HSE laws and regulations, including knowing legal requirements, meeting each requirement, and demonstrating compliance.
• Communicate site HSE goals, action plans, and results to the organization.
• Implement systems to drive positive HSE results, update HSE KPI scores and action plans regularly, and issue required HSE data accurately and on time.
• Maintain an up-to-date facility HSE performance profile.
• Review and develop HSE policies and procedures annually, ensuring all training is completed in a timely manner.
• Consult with senior managers and operation managers on formulating best-practice policies and procedures.
• Keep staff and leadership informed of changes in HSE legislation and DSV corporate HSE processes.
• Devise, develop, and monitor effective Risk Assessment management strategies and implementation.
• Ensure appropriate HSE risk assessments are completed by trained or qualified personnel.
• Propose, implement, and monitor measures to comply with HSE regulations.
• Design, implement, and monitor workplace safety audits and ensure needed changes are made to promote safety.
• Serve as the DSV representative for OSHA, EPA, DOT, DHS, or other regulatory agencies and address site-level issues.
• Audit facility and personnel for safety and/or environmental deficiencies and correct or address them promptly.
• Handle all workers’ compensation claims until closure in conjunction with site and corporate safety resources.
• Maintain accident statistics, analyze trends, and propose remedial action where necessary.
• Investigate or arrange for investigation of all accidents and near-misses, prepare reports of findings, and implement approved courses of action.
• Prepare reports for enforcing authorities and the DSV Corporate Safety Department as required.
• Assist and support Risk Assessments and monitor the availability and appropriateness of risk assessments and safe work practices.
• Ensure implementation of the Emergency Management System (EMS) procedures and monitor effectiveness through fire evacuation and severe weather drills at least once a year.
• Liaise between management and staff on all HSE matters to ensure consistent application and understanding of policies and procedures.
• Responsible for OSHA recordkeeping, reporting, and maintenance of required programs and training.
• Ensure the Safety Program is in place and conduct training for all new hires.
• Ensure all employees are trained to identify potential hazards in the workplace.
• Ensure, at minimum, legal compliance and reduce the risk of non-compliance in environmental management.
• Identify opportunities for continuous environmental improvement.
• Represent the operation with local and national health, safety, and environment bodies.
• Promote and coordinate the integration of environmental management and sustainability issues into policies, rules, and operations.
• Responsible for all USEPA and other environmental agency reporting and recordkeeping when applicable.
• Communicate problems and questions to site leadership and implement solutions to minimize risk.
• Responsible for all equipment, supplies, documents, and materials related to the job.
• Follow all DSV policies and procedures and comply with all federal, state, and local regulations.
• Communicate with all levels of staff and the public as appropriate to the job.

Requirements

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
• 3 years’ experience working in a logistics/distribution or relevant environment.
• Prior experience in safety observations/inspections, developing and implementing compliance strategies and plans.
• Knowledge of safety and health management systems and practices.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior MHE certification / knowledge of basic MHE operation.

Skills

• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint), RF Scanners, and WMS functions.
• Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to accomplish job tasks in a timely manner.
• Good organizational and personnel skills.
• Good communication skills, both written and oral.
• Good leadership, supervision, and planning skills.
• Able to work flexible schedules, including nights and weekends, as required by the operation.
• Participate in cross-training activities to improve knowledge in multiple areas/departments and assist as a back-up when needed.
• Ability to effectively adapt to change and thrive in a fast-paced work environment.
• Ability to work in unregulated temperatures within the warehouse (mild to moderate during warmer and colder months).
• Work overtime as dictated by business needs, whether mandatory or voluntary.
• English language skills (reading, writing, verbal) for business communication.
• Basic to intermediate mathematical skills to verify quantities of product, count inventory, or perform other duties associated with handling, storing, and distributing client products.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is rarely exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.

Pay

For this position, the expected base pay range is $86,688.00 – $108,360.00 annually. Actual compensation will be determined based on job-related factors such as relevant experience, skills, education, certifications, and geographic location, in accordance with applicable laws and company policy.
