UPMC’s Logan Medical Center is seeking a Phlebotomy Supervisor to join their full-time, day-shift team, Monday through Friday. This role supervises three outpatient phlebotomy teams and requires regular travel to other locations, including BMA Express Lab and Ebensburg Medical Center. Prior leadership experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a schedule to provide coverage to meet patient care needs.
  • Procures appropriate specimens by venipuncture, heelstick, and fingerstick following established procedures, including proper patient identification. May collect non-blood samples as required, including at off-site locations.
  • Performs all responsibilities according to UPMC Health System philosophy to fulfill customer needs.
  • Trains and orients new employees and students.
  • Performs staff performance evaluations and administers corrective action as required.
  • Responsible for maintaining and updating specimen procurement policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates dependability, reliability, and independent judgment to accommodate department needs.
  • Promotes patient safety.
  • Interacts courteously and professionally with all laboratory customers; responds to telephone inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Develops quality initiatives to improve processes and customer satisfaction; assists in measuring customer satisfaction through various metrics.
  • Accurately registers patient demographic information and laboratory test orders into information systems, ensuring adequacy of patient information.
  • Informs technical staff, supervisory personnel, and/or pathologists of unusual or problematic incidents.
  • Instructs patients on collection procedures for laboratory specimens obtained by the patient.
  • Adheres to established laboratory and hospital policies in areas of procedures, methods, quality control, safety, compliance, and personnel.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; associate degree in laboratory sciences preferred.
  • Three years of phlebotomy experience required; hospital phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Medical terminology experience required.
  • Prior experience in roles emphasizing customer service required.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with all age groups and populations.
  • Knowledge of LIS computer information systems related to specimen procurement and registration preferred; proficiency with Microsoft Office applications preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

  • Phlebotomy Technician (PBT(ASCP)) or MLT(ASCP) with significant phlebotomy experience or equivalent preferred.
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting (with renewal).
  • Act 33 (with renewal).
  • Act 34 (with renewal).
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance (with renewal).
